i commissioned this. PAINTED PJ lyrics and with careful shading. My fave classic lyrics. SPOT the not-so-true PJ lyrics (clue Temple..!)!!
    Super Eddie classic.........
It stands with pride in my living room.
  • Plus they plus they occasionally use the lead singer to support their encoures, a la MSG in NY singing Hunger Strike!!!

No. With shows that are up to 3+ hours long, an opener just makes the show too long for too many people IMO, especially for those in the pit.

No, almost every opening band they choose sucks.  Only way to top the level of suck they’ve approached wools be have some of the acts mentioned so far, like Gaslight Anthem.

Isbell and Sturgill are so far beyond this it would have to almost be co-headlining.

Last time I saw PJ with an opener was in London (2007 I think) and Gomez were supporting. Great little show and awesome band - but I'll have to go with Evening with PJ and get that 3hr set!

At least in the Northeast, Isbell and Sturgill are nowhere near Pearl Jam's level yet. The last time each came through on their own, Isbell played a 3500 capacity pavilion and Sturgill a 2500 theater. Isbell has played 7500 seats twice but as a coheadliner with Brandi Carlile or Frank Turner. I love both of those guys but they have a ways to go before they're co-headlining with Pearl Jam.

Yes. I do love the epic long shows and setlists but having other artists around them and the collaborations would be good for the band to help inspire some fresh creativity. I've always mainly enjoyed who they've toured with in the past too. So it's a win/win.

Yes if the opening band is The Gaslight Anthem.  No if it’s anyone else.

    im kidding.

in all seriousness though, AWOLNATION. thats 40 minutes no one on this board is prepared for. Everyone would walk away smiling, something that seems really hard to do these days around here....

also, the current guitarist, not the one pictured here, is Zack Irons. I dont know what else to say but that this should have happened years ago

Awolnation is really good.  Caught them at ACL 8 or 9 years ago.

Maybe im in the minority but give me a great opening band and 29 PJ songs vs no opening band and 35 PJ songs.

I wasn’t trying to say they were as big as PJ. Just that they can pull off their own high profile tours and it would have little benefit downgrading from the the headline spot.

You said they should be co-headlining with Pearl Jam.

On this new point, I can sorta see that with Isbell. Sturgill, though, is right at the level of many PJ openers I've seen...MMJ, Band of Horses, etc. I don't know that either of those guys is headlining 18k seats+ anytime soon. Seems to me there is plenty of benefit to getting in front of potential new fans in arenas and amphitheaters. I'm sure a lot goes into those tour decisions, so who knows.
