So is the rumor that they are playing these shows out of contractual obligation, then announcing their breakup shortly after still floating around?0

The first I’m hearing that. But damn you for putting it in my headCopperTom said:So is the rumor that they are playing these shows out of contractual obligation, then announcing their breakup shortly after still floating around?0

Last thing I read was a Washington Post interview in May previewing Jim's solo show at 9:30 Club.
Jim says they are planning to get together this fall & start to work on a new record:
While James is mostly on the road solo this year,
My Morning Jacket will play three shows this summer before getting together in the fall to work on new material, he says.
“Sometimes you just gotta step back and take a break for a while,” says James, who adds that the band recently finished a companion album to 2015′s “The Waterfall” and has a live record in the can.
“Everybody likes to hypothesize and guess and wonder, but sometimes it’s nice to just disappear for a while.”

Yeah seems more likely they had originally planned to tour this summer (maybe around a release) but ended up scrapping the idea and taking an extended break. These shows were booked well in advance so they stuck to playing them.
they will be back next year“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”0

Have a great time, Dave! These are going to be great shows!
I'm assuming with no album to promote, they won't be repeating any songs over the 2 nights. We'll see.0

Tour Sweden before 2021 or I burn all the records."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0
