    Face Recognition.

It scares the hell out of me.  I'm actually thinking about starting a campaign to outlaw it.

There is something to be said when there are cameras everywhere to watch your every move.  The more cameras we have the less cops we would need though, that much I get.

I wonder if in the future we would end up like the movie "Demolition Man" and have docile cops?

So facial recognition to me, is something that can be used for more harm than good. This might be the conspiracy theorist in my head talking but I just can't see this being a good thing in the long run.

On a good note, Amazon flopped on their test run.  So maybe there is still hope?

    Thoughts?

This could be a good segue into the "Is Tech taking over our lives" thread.

Adding to this is the fact that faces are the new fingerprints (which were the new passwords). While with fingerprints one would have to hover their finger over a sensor to capture a graphic of it to steal an identity, phones today effortlessly and invisibly capture a 3D map of your face that could (in the wrong hands) be used as a log-in to anything imaginable.

Add to this the fact that you really don't need to be all that clever to build AI tools to do this kind of nefarious act. AI has embraced open-source, and there are plenty of walkthroughs on training facial recognition models.

    You're right to be scared.

Yeah, I don't like face recognition that gets shared. I don't mind that my own phone uses it for security, but beyond that, no thanks. I will avoid it whenever possible. I am DYING to see my self as an old woman, lol, but I can't take the chance. I also saw another thing I really really didn't like the other day. At my local Walmart they tore out all the cashier stations and replaced them with self-checkout. That is bad enough. Now they they are down to maybe 5 actual human cashier stands, and the rest is all self-serve. But anyway, that's not the worst of it. What really bugged me even more is that they have these fucking screens over each self-service checkout station that films your face (and body) the entire time you're standing there scanning your stuff, and it says right on it that they're saving the recordings. This isn't face recognition in and of itself, but it will certainly serve the growth of the use of face recognition going forward. I had such a problem with this set up that I mentioned it to their customer service people, as a customer complaint. Not that it will help, obviously.

But don't most stores - large and small - already have cameras within and outside their premises?  Not to mention gas stations, ATM's, high-accident areas, etc.  I'm not sure how it is in Vancouver, but they're all over the place here.

That said, I fucking detest the self-serve things.  Get the odd item that can't be scanned and have to wait for someone.  Or, there's almost always a glitch of some type.

And while we're at it, enforce the express lane rule, goddammit!

Not with close up video, and not directly connected to literally every item you buy, not to mention the actual pay station itself. They could easily link our card info with our face with this kind of set up.

Why would walmart film people paying for stuff?

You are recorded in almost any business you walk into these days. A factory, a store, miniature golf course, a weed shop.
Unless, you’re paying cash, every purchase is recorded thru c.c or bank card ect.
Everyone here( I’m willing to bet)has posted a picture of themselves on the internet.

I know a lady who stole 1/2 gallons of peppermint schnapps weekly from a store using the self serve. They finally caught up with her after over a year of doing this. I’m sure cameras were involved, or maybe just a simple inventory.

Probably more concerned with the cashiers slipping a bill or two.  I was at an IKEA and the cashier found a penny and I told her it was her lucky day ... she informed me she would be fired if she kept it and that IKEA watches them like hawks.

No way. They would of considered that too fancy. Straight out the bottle or tall glass only. It was only thing they drank🤢, besides some moonshine they brewed in their bedroom closet.

I'm a princess. I want to just stand there, chill, and let someone do it for me, lol. I feel like I'm paying too much for my stuff to also have to scan my own items. And these big stores are making and hoarding quite enough money already. I don't see why I should help them hoard even more while they reduce their payroll by doing the work for them for free! If the items were CHEAPER if I scanned my own, I'd be all over it.

Every business exists to generate as much profit as possible. Every business will eventually be forced to keep up with the new efficiencies their competitors have through automation, or promote their humanness as a strategy to make up for their disadvantaged position.

The government needs to work on skilling for the needs of tomorrow. As a businessman, it’s not my responsibility to cease progress because of the government’s ineptitude to recognize that need. The days of paying people for physical strength are going away quickly, and by introducing efficiencies through automation, we can focus on paying for people for their brains rather than their hands.

Every business exists to generate as much profit as possible. Every business will eventually be forced to keep up with the new efficiencies their competitors have through automation, or promote their humanness as a strategy to make up for their disadvantaged position.
Well, companies do not need "as much profits as possible" so I rather slow it down a bit by going to manned lines.

The owners of stores from the supermarket chain ICA in Sweden are pretty much always the richest people in the cities they live in all through Sweden - so me slowing that down a bit, I don't think they will be too hurt by. They would still be the richest people in very city with manned lines.

And also, "businesses exists to generate as much profit as possible" isn't completely true. As an example we also have the supermarket chain COOP which is a "cooperative" and own by us customers (members) - which means the pay for the people working there has been generally better than at the competitors, they have always had more ecologica/organic food options then the competitors etc. Because the customers/members want that. Even if that has made the profits less than possible.

Everything doesn't have to be on the terms of predatory capitalism. And you don't have to be a corporate-apologist.

And remember some on here do not think that McDonalds should pay livable wages and they don't have to in the US - and make profits. They have to work with the union in Sweden regarding a decent pay and guess what - still makes profits. Not as much as possible. But still profits enough to make people rich.

And I work within the field of automation, so I do have a decent hang of that.

Walmart needs more profit? Where’s the ethics in that? If the Walton family reinvested some of that profit in their employees or paid their fare share of taxes, I could get with you on “efficiencies” but when all the gains of efficiency just trickle to the top, there’s a problem. And not everyone can work with their brain.

Walmart doesn’t need more profit, but they’re entitled to it. When did the US start to represent ‘capitalism until the public decides you have too much’? If this is determined to be the direction the country wants, go for it, get it passed as law, but otherwise, it’s unrealistic to expect ethics beyond what is legally mandated from businesses.

And H2TM, I’m extremely sorry to say this, but we will all likely be replaced by AI in some way, shape or form (unless we’re fortunate/clever enough to involve ourselves in being AI operations) - but the ‘hand’ work is easier to automate and thus will go first. This is the logical progression the world is showing itself to be on already. The pursuit of those efficiencies is happening today, so we can debate back and forth whether it’s ethical, or we can talk about what should be done since it’s already happening today.

It’s also worth mentioning that there aren’t just savings being shown with AI - there are tangible service improvements because AI doesn’t show up hungover, AI doesn’t hate its minimum wage job and sabotage performance, coaching AI has reliable results, AI follows clear instructions reliably, etc. I happened to be watching Walmart Labs (Walmart’s AI division) speak at a conference a few weeks ago and left very confident that this is actually their number one rationale for pursuing better tech (and as the guy who runs our tech program, I can tell you that’s ours as well).

Next, ‘paid their fare share of taxes’ - this must be your definition of ‘fair’ as opposed to the legal one. Is this arbitrary or do you have a logically founded definition for this?

Finally, on the ‘what the family should do with their profit’ - that’s their business, not yours or mine. I personally believe that a happy and well compensated group of employees are far more likely to be productive and profitable than the opposite, but it’s not my right to assert what should be done with Walmart’s profit.

AI is really going to screw things up.  Some prestigious and well paying professions that require advanced degrees are going to disappear overnight.

They’ll take longer than the less prestigious and less well-paying positions. This is why I say that ‘now’ is the right time to look into reskilling depending on the job an individual currently does. Some have more time than others, but those with more time before the major impact need all the time they have to reskill to a greater degree.

We shouldn’t blame AI for being natural progress - we should blame humans for thinking they can avoid natural progress and not require change. This is a new economic era, and just like every new economic era, it requires an appropriate approach.

I also think those with prestigious and well paying professions should get familiar with their tech teams now, and start to propose ways to leverage AI for the business’s benefit, and making that case for AI augmenting people tasks, rather than outright doing them.
