Welcome back.0 -
I think that's a reach. 1. Don't blame US politicians if your politicians steal policies, good or bad 2. Close your borders to pharm if that's a concern for you. Ironically though, if we pay less, you're going to pay more. 3. You don't have to watch our television shows or listen to our music, so I think that's a stretch. I don't know why you would care how much vacation we have.PJ_Soul said:
Actually that's not true for Canada at all. Not even close. Canada is heavily impacted by all of those things. Politicians on the right here borrow American policies for their platforms all the time and we're constantly having to fight against backtracking in terms of health care and workers' rights. How much you pay for medicine heavily impacts us because Americans flock across our border to buy our cheaper medicine, and again because we are always threatened by American policies on that, and by American pharma, deregulating environmental protections hurts us all, and Canada is jam packed with American food products, and heavily influenced by American advertising and broadcasting. So yeah, American has a massive impact on my country in most aspect - political, cultural, and economic.mrussel1 said:
Not the food we eat, or how much we pay for medicine, or how many weeks of vacation we get, how fat we are, or a thousand other things that seems to be the topic du jour. I agree that our international movements, NATO, JCPOA, trade, etc., all have an effect on Europe and Canada, but there are limits to what materially affects the world.PJ_Soul said:
Sweden doesn't have the massive impact on the entire world like the US does. I'm not sure why some Americans don't get why people from other countries are so interested in what is happening in America. It's not because we're bored. It's because IT IMPACTS US.pjhawks said:i find it weird that a person from sweden seems to have the most posts about US politicians and politics. i can't imagine under any circumstances posting this much about Swedish politicians or politics.
Environment, yes.
So I get what you're interested because of the size and influence, but to think of our domestic policies as materially affecting the way of life of a Canadian or European seems a stretch. Don't give us that much credit.0 -

Great news! Perhaps she should let her obnoxious Chief of Staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, know that, since he seems to be fomenting this very public fracture.Spiritual_Chaos said:tempo_n_groove said:All your asses are going to get tossed or timed out.

It's quite interesting (in a bad way). He was a leader in Justice Democrats, which is a spin off from the Bernie campaign, I believe. They are uncompromising in every way as you know. I wonder if she is concerned she would lose their support if she shit canned him. In a normal world, a COS that criticizes members of the same party so publicly would be walked out by the EOD.jeffbr said:

That must be her concern. His behavior as Chief of Staff is pretty unprecedented, and it appears that she's either afraid of him, or doesn't see the eventual consequences. What he is doing, and she is enabling, will ultimately be her downfall. If she can't build coalitions within her own party due to that asshat spouting off, then she'll be crippled and ineffective as a legislator. The NYT had a good article about him a few days ago:mrussel1 said:

And the field gets even more crowded. Candidate #4 announced.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/york-businesswoman-jamaican-immigrant-scherie-144757943.htmlWASHINGTON – New York businesswoman Scherie Murray announced Wednesday that she is running for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's congressional seat in 2020.
In a series of tweets announcing her candidacy, Murray, who immigrated to New York from Jamaica when she was 9, said Ocasio-Cortez was more "worried about being famous" than representing her constituents.
"There’s a crisis in Queens and it’s called AOC," the Republican said, referring to Ocasio-Cortez by her initials. She said the freshman Democrat "seeks celebrity & publicity" and "thinks public service is not about serving the public, but herself."
Murray said she had experience building bridges "between constituents in our community and the elected officials that represent them, between different nationalities and races, and between political parties." She said Ocasio-Cortez instead favored conflict and criticized her for her role in driving Amazon to abandon its plans to build a second headquarters in New York.
The youngest woman ever elected to Congress, Ocasio-Cortez has been a frequent target of attacks from conservatives on Capitol Hill and in the news media. A self-described democratic socialist best known for being a sponsor of the Green New Deal, Ocasio-Cortez had been portrayed as the face of a leftward shift in the Democratic Party.
Ocasio-Cortez is also known as a member of "The Squad" along with Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. The freshmen lawmakers' liberal positions have at times put them at odds with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
This week, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley and Tlaib have been at the center of a firestorm created after President Donald Trump told the four minority congresswomen, all of whom are U.S. citizens, to "go back" and fix their countries of origin before try to push legislative changes in America.
Murray made an unsuccessful run in a special election for a New York Assembly seat in 2015, losing by more than 85 percentage points. She lost by a similar margin in a 2013 bid for New York City Council.
She is the fourth Republican to file for a run against Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Post reported, joining former police officer John Cummings, journalist Ruth Papazian and building superintendent Miguel Hernandez.
The Republicans will face an uphill battle in New York's heavily Democratic 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens. Ocasio-Cortez won the seat in 2018 with 78% of the vote.
