You know what I find funny about that graphic, the only 2 presidents not to be re-elected had the least amount of resistance. That doesn't exactly boost confidence that the higher numbers mean as much as we'd like to think.

The thing is, they must have had that thing already made and waiting to be used. Trump was reacting there to something that had JUST happened. Did someone seriously run over to the printing room or whatever in the WH and have that made up in a matter of minutes? I doubt that. I think they had that thing sitting around, just hoping for a good time to use it. It's ridiculous. We'll probably continue to see it at rallies and stuff.

However HW Bush was in the middle of winning the Gulf War and was immensely popular in February of '91. edit--And it appears June of '79 was right when the bottom began to fall out from under Carter. That's when he gave the "Malaise Speech." Perhaps the numbers reflected in the graph didn't fully account for that or were taken prior?

The cost of air travel is an easy target no matter who is president. There is a budget for Air Force One. It will cost taxpayers if the POTUS flies everyday to play golf the same as it will if the pilots set on the runway picking their nose for the entire year.

Absolutely there are high fixed costs for maintaining an aircraft and staff, but there are also variable costs when one flies the thing. Aircraft aren’t cheap to operate, nor are the extra staff required whenever the POTUS moves around.
