First, even when we make bad choices and know that the consequences could be bad, dealing with those consequences can be pretty shitty and I just feel bad for people who are suffering.
Second, prior to being elected as POTUS, he seemed like a pretty jovial fellow. From what I've seen, he didn't seem to be all that cranky before the election... surrounded by "yes men" that bow and scrape, a convincing enough story of success to garner public adoration, freedom to bang hoors and do blow... She may honestly have never seen him legitimately angry before they married. I'm joking...and I'm totally not joking at all lol
His carefully constructed fantasy world began to crumble as soon as he declared his candidacy and he thought winning was the only way to fix it. Well, he's dumb and that was obviously a bad plan. Now, she's got a husband who was practically never analyzed or criticised to his face and now he's facing constant scrutiny and screwing up left and right. And yes, I do believe his fantasy has deteriorated to the point where he sees his flaws and mistakes.
