    FWIW: At one of the two marches that my daughter has attended with me (both at her request), a news photographer wanted to snap her picture and was actually kind enough to ask for permission, which we both denied. I, because of the assholes out in the world who would think that she's being exploited; and she, because, in her words, "That was creepy." (She was six at the time.)

    Now, a case could be made by likely those same assholes that the #fakenews left-wing media wants to exploit children to further its socialist agenda with those libtard zombies who read the newspaper, but they also maybe -- just maybe -- want to report on something that's happening, which is kind of, you know, a journalist's prime directive.

    This same case can be made for your young right-to-lifers pictured above. They are likely neither brainwashed nor being exploited but rather wholeheartedly believe in the cause that they are supporting. And the photojournalist present captured a moment in time.

    My son is five, and he just wants to punch things and watch Star Wars and shit. He probably thinks guns are awesome, especially laser shooters. I'm sure that he thinks his sister is dumb for wasting a day walking around a park carrying a sign and yelling when she could be out chasing down imaginary bad guys with plastic katanas. Same gene pool, totally different children. I'm not sure which one is the anomaly. My daughter tends to make friends with kids (both boys and girls) who are more like her. My son doesn't really have friends; he has buddies. And they all seem pretty expendable as far as he's concerned, which is fine--I'm the same way.

    I guess what I'm getting at with that last paragraph is that kids develop differently. And it seems harshly cynical to label the younger kids that we see in news articles protesting for commonsense gun laws or against abortion as being exploited. Hence the Bowie quote.

    It sounds suspiciously like you have a son and a daughter.  Mine are the exact same way... just older versions.

    I wish it were so simple, except that my daughter has boyfriends from school and on her hockey team who are more thoughtful types and already engaged and vocal about civic matters. Hell, all the class parents even got a letter from her teacher asking us to remind them to be respectful of other people's opinions when discussing political matters.

    I'll be at a local march with my daughter. She's upset that we're not making the trip to D.C., but when she makes enough money to pay for that trip, she can feel free to take me  -- that is, if I'm not dead by then.

    I would encourage you and your daughter to invite anyone at her school that seems to be alone.  Anyone who sits alone in the cafeteria, anyone who is picked last in gym class, anyone who needs a friend.  These are the ones we need to look after, you never know when one conversation can change someone's path who is young and lost.  A person who wants to kill will find a way to kill, be it with a gun, a knife, a car, or some other means.  Gun laws need to change, but much more needs to be done beyond that......

    I brought these points up to my kids yesterday after school.  My 17year old shrugged it off.  My 12year old stopped dead in her tracks and looked straight at me as if a light bulb just turned on......

    We'll be in Chicago on the 24th.....

    Wish I could.  That day falls on the same day as the semi-annual Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair I'm doing.  It's likely to be my last fair and, Sacramento being the state capitol, this events could make that fair difficult, problematic a big money looser, and yet another nail in the coffin of my book business.

    But oh well.  Some things are just more important.   So thank you to those who are going to the march!

    DK, I just love your girl and her pluckiness.  And for you and your wife to encourage it, and her knowledge, and her standing up - getting it - at such a sweet young point in her life.  God knows I didn't know shit about that at her age.

    i love that the kids are being active. our generation has failed them. to the gop i say ignore these kids at your own peril. they are pissed off, and they are not buying the thoughts and prayers shit any longer. gop is going to lose an entire generation of voters once these kids are of age.
