that was a perfectly fine explanation.

I loved chicago beef and think the dipping of a french dip is dumb. I would say they are not the same, since a french dip is on 75% of bar food menus across the U.S.
    Exactly! You are spot on.

Yeah I haven’t had a Chicago Italian beef sandwich yet but I very much so expect it to be better than a French dip. And thanks for the info Biggs, it was very helpful! I think I might just stick to dry and make sure the place has it stewing in the “gravy”. I wouldn’t mind some softness in the bread, but full on sogginess I can’t do.

I feel yuck today after stuffing myself with pizza last night. Plus thirsty.
Yeah, anytime I have pizza for dinner I have to make sure I have an extra large glass of water near my bed somewhere, crazy how much it dries you up.

I'm thirsty for hours afterwards. Kept drinking after dinner and before bed.
    My gut feels yuck today.
And I feel lazy to do anything lol

Wob, exactly what one might expect from someone that chose to live in Las Vegas for years.
If you have had a true French Dip
    .
    Not dumb.

    Chicago beef sandwich is great

No better French dip than Phillipe

I’m missing what vegas has to do with anything

I don’t like a french dip because I don’t care for soggy bread....reminds me of joey chestnut dipping a hot dog.

BTW....vegas has some really good philly cheesesteaks.

    but, I digress.

The last one is the best sandwich I’ve ever ate in my life. Dalessandro’s, American cheese without onions. It is in fact pornographic, hopefully the mods don’t close this thread.

    This is sooo derailed lol.

    Phillipe the original.
    Los Angeles.
    Money
    Fuckin. A.

I'm also partial to adding some spicy horseradish sauce post-dip.

  • I'm getting a kick out of how Scruffy shows us one good pizza... finally... and his confidence in this thread is mile high.

And that last Philly sandwich did not score any points for being beautiful. I'm not discounting the possibility of being great tasting though. RiotZ has a bit of street cred.

I do? Lol. But I really don’t need it, it’s Dalessandro’s, it’s very commonly know as one of the best. 4.5 stars on yelp with thousands of reviews.

Italian beef is different than a French dip and much better imo. The photo below is a Portillos beef. It’s a real pic I stole online rather than the perfected shots you might see in a commercial. This is the real deal. You can see the sogginess of the bread which is a good thing. It’s got the right amount of au jus but not too much.  When you’re in Chicago, go to Portillos! The best. Als beef is very good too. Johnnies Beef is amazing too but it’s in Emwood Park which is a neighborhood on the west outskirts of Chicago (too far). Those are 3 local icons...can’t go wrong. But DO go to Portillos. It’s an experience unlike any other.
I’ll second Portillo's. It is definitely an unmatched experience. And get a chocolate cake shake, too!

As for the Italian beef, I do like the sandwich with some au jus on it, I just don’t like the whole thing dunked. Like you said, it makes the whole thing too soggy and a complete mess.  I do like to get a cup on the side and dip it as I go, but definitely some on the sandwich itself too.  And I usually get both the sport peppers and giardinera. Cuz why not?!

Ok so I wasn’t going to explain this but I guess I have to now. See, the very thing that makes it look like a turd is actually what makes it so good! The chopped beef and the American cheese have fused together as one, which is the most important quality in a good cheesesteak. It is only one word, after all.
