After watching this I get why I didn't recognize the dice. They were in A New Hope but not seen onscreen since.

People complained that TFA was too similar to A New Hope and now that they went opposite to what people got with the original trilogy people still complain. I don't mind fresh plots. Why should they keep Snoke for Ep9? Why can't we see the main antagonist kill his master sooner in the trilogy and assume the role of leader? Why copy Palpatine? What's the big deal if Luke used a hologram to confront Kylo at the end? What's the big deal if he used a blue light sabre at the end? These are some of the issues I have noticed online today on comments in Instagram and reviews. Halts Maul! lol

I have no problem with Snoke going out in this movie. I have a problem with them introducing a character in the 7th film of a series who seems to be the 2nd or 3rd most powerful force user we've ever seen, who clearly has been physically damaged in some horrific way, who Luke, Leia and Han all know, who was able to turn Ben Solo not just against his teacher but also against his parents, who was able to become Supreme Commander of the First Order, and for there to be absolutely no explanation of who this guy was. It doesn't matter who I thought he was or who other fans speculated he was. The first film of the new trilogy introduced him. The second film of the new trilogy showed how powerful he was. Neither film gave any explanation at all for who and what Snoke was. Powerful characters like that don't just come and go. That is poor storytelling.

    yeah i hear ya.

I didn't mind the similarities between this and New Hope/Empire and some others, thought it was a nice gesture.

Also one character i didn't care for too much if not at all was Benicio Del Toro's codebreaker character "DJ".  Kinda a waste

Maybe he is Darth Plageuis and will come back in ep9 and more will be revealed?

A viewer's comment on Rotten Tomatoes...

"Such an amazing film!! A lot of these "die hard fans" who have given this film poor ratings seem have only watched this episode for face value and failed to see what this movie was trying to convey. People are complaining about how many plot points went nowhere when in fact the characters' failures were the whole point! Yoda actually stated it in the film, "The greatest teacher, failure is." How are people missing this?! Yes, Finn and Rose failed in their mission but learned something meaningful in return; true evil is not just those who murder and kill, it's those who let it happen and build their fortunes on top of the misfortunes of others. Yes, Rey failed to turn Ben but she learned about the gray and how everything is not all black and white the way she wants it to be especially as it pertains to Ben. By understanding that, she can finally see that Ben has to take the first step to help himself before a redemption can occur, which it totally where this is heading. Everyone is capable of good and evil and even the most vile person deserves a shot at redemption which is what Star Wars is all about. Ben failing Luke and Luke failing Ben; this huge mess that resulted from a difference in perception. Poe failing as a commander only to finally learn about the true value of sacrifice and how running is not a failure but a hope for the future after Holdo's final act. Those are just some examples, there are just so many that it blows my mind how alot of people have passed it off as "pointless."

Luke's character is one of the more interesting aspects of the film as well. Fans tend to put his character on a pedestal as some sort of untouched hero for the light. This film reminds us that he's human and that even the strongest of us can still break under the immense weight of guilt and trauma he carries on his shoulders which is something everyone can relate to. Even Rey's parentage reveal; a reminder that you don't have to come from a great name or family to be or achieve greatness.

I couldn't get enough of this film. The acting was superb, writing was excellent, and visuals were outstanding. Rian Johnson created a triumph despite what many people are saying. He honored the past while forging a new path for the next generation; a bold and exciting move. We don't want to see something we have already seen, that would be so boring. It's not about the destination in this movie, it's all about the journey and it's one hell of a ride."

    I couldn't agree more.

Terribly mediocre film. TFA was a much better movie.
The pacing and editing made it have absolutely no flow, especially in the first half. Lots of wasted or overlong scenes that could have taken 15 to 20 minutes off this movie easily. I felt like I was sitting there for 3 hours.
Felt like there wasnt much action: lots of spaceship battles but needed more lightsaber dueling or something......
Then Luke just internally combusts into thin air.
    6.5/10

And do we know if  Kylo Ren was being truthful to Rey when he told her who her parents were?
And so you see, I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

I can see liking TFA better, but it was light years ahead of the dead end R1, which had zero character development.
I loved it, it was great. Leia force pulling herself back to the ship was not pulled off well, but the rest of it was as pretty solid.

I don't see how people can look at these films and not see how much better the filmmaking and storytelling has become since the originals.  They were sparse and had huge empty voids, maybe the new ones overcompensate a bit, but all the acting (aside from Leia) is better and the exposition is better even if it's overdone.

The casino bit and Finns story arc were a bit lackluster and forced.

Rey's parents being nobodies is exactly what I hoped for, anything else would be hokey.

People are seriously complaining that Luke's story ended the same way as Obi-Wan before him??? That's the perfect end for him and it would be weird to have him around too long as there is little history of Masters and apprentices actually getting much time together in the films.

The light speed attack was cool, but it screws the story up pretty bad, why didn't they just do that to the Death Stars and Starkiller?

Needed one more good lightsaber duel.

Disappointed not to learn about Snoke.  As was pointed out, he's been shown to be incredibly powerful in the Force and has achieved much in a short time, we need an explanation of who and how.
I think it will be addressed in the next film, and I think that because Disney has been making a serious effort to listen to the massive amounts of feedback they are getting from this huge fan base.
People wanted a throwback feel after the prequels so they delivered that.  People wanted to be surprised by this one, they delivered that.
They know people want to know about Snoke, so I think chances are good they will deliver, but how they do that is a mystery to me.  My guess and hope is through the Kylo-Rey mind connection.

Speaking of, somebody said that bored them?? Those scenes may have had more authentic pathos and skillfully portrayed emotion than all 7 preceding films combined.
An excellent newish Force power that will be a huge part of the final film, I'm guessing.

Regarding your comment on why not destroy the death star and starkiller base by smashing into it at light speed....

I am so mad that they didn't explain how C3PO got the red arm in TFA and how he got his proper arm back in TLJ. They need to revisit this important part of the story in ep9 or make a stand alone movie to explain this for us diehard fans.

I liked it. I'm glad they tried something different. Liked what they did with Luke, the action was great. Liked the idea of the story for the most part.
Now, that is not to say it did not have its issues. An example, I think Snoke, much like Darth Maul in the prequels, was wasted.
And it seemed like Johnson took a lot from TFA and just ignored, redid, or unmade it. Almost seems like there is no plan for this trilogy and each writer is doing their own thing regardless of what happened before.

You joke but there actually is a comic that explains this. And I fully expect we'll get a Snoke novel that explains his origin.

There are so many reasons to be critical of the prequels but a big one has always been Lucas not planning that trilogy out. To see LucasFilm make the same exact mistake all over again is incredibly disappointing.
