Does anyone every wonder why alot of PJ songs are played superfast?
asif its a record being played in a faster speed than normal
Do they speed things up to be able to play alot of songs in total?
honestly sometimes i wish they played some songs a bit more in the studio pase... sometimes its just 'crazy fast' ...
what do you all think?

I think Alive is played too slow on Ten. It's better in concert. I did feel like the live version of Gone on one of my bootlegs was too fast.PORTLAND - 18 JUL 98 // TAMPA - 12 AUG 00 // PORTLAND - 02 NOV 00 // SEATTLE - 05 NOV 00 // SEATTLE - 09 DEC 02

I totally agree that Alive is too slow in the studio version. Put the songs with a more punky riff they play so enormousely fast... Even flow for instance... so so fast... also Why go ..... hard to keep up for Ed too in his singing...
so then why not slow it down just a bit?"Ransom paid the Devil, he whispers pleasing words.

Even Flow is really fast when they play it live.0

If you listen to the Arnhem, Netherlands bootleg 2006 almost every up tempo song is played in an amazing speed. Ed's singing almost becomes rapping."Ransom paid the Devil, he whispers pleasing words.

IT'S EVOLUTION BABY...
Well yeah, they play DTE quicker live, but it is the evolution from studio to live2003 - Sydney x3,2006 - Reading Festival,2007 - Katowice, London, Nijmegen, Rock Werchter,2008 - MSG x2, Hartford, Mansfield x2, Beacon Theater,2009 - Melbourne, Sydney,2010 - I watched it go to fire!2011 - EV Brisbane x3, Newcastle, Sydney x3,2012 - Manchester x 2, Amsterdam x2, Prague, Berlin x2, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen,2014 - Sydney, EV Sydney x3

i agree...songs are played faster at concerts. the one that bothers me the most is I Got Shit. such an awesome song...but when it's sped up it loses a little of the magic.

agree with all of the above but it has to be said some of the songs work much better when played faster live than in studio
Daughter (not always played faster but not bad when it is)
Corduroy
Given To Fly
RVM
Grievance
ones they could slow down for - off he goes in 2006 felt like it was rushed!0 -
Being a musician myself, I can only say that adrenaline kicks in. it is pretty hard to play things EXACTLY the same as the recordings, and when you got a flow going on stage and crowds cheering, you tend to play faster and kick things into overdrive.
Plus, knowing PJ, they like to change things up, and songs from ten, which they have been playing for 17 years, sometimes you need to switch things up to keep them interesting.0 -
Honestly, I think it's just something that happens when you're in a live setting. I've played a lot of shows over the years where the adrenaline takes over and you can't help playing a bit above the normal tempo. It's true that alot of the songs can suffer when played faster, ie Given To Fly or I Got Shit. Just something that happens.I'm so dangerous I smoke dynamite.0

well i can imagine that its just something that happens but shouldnt they keep an eye on that ?
Im not telling them how to play it but if its what you say it is; unintentional, then maybe they should keep it they way they really ment it to sound.
Anyway I love their concerts regardless. And when present at shows (one so far) I love the speed thing. I guess my critique comes while listening to bootlegs at home, with a normal heartbeat"Ransom paid the Devil, he whispers pleasing words.

its something i learn't when learning performance at college, you stay tight as a band when you kick off a fair whack, your concentration is more tuned.
If you start off to slow is too hard to bring it back but if you start off real fast, you can afford to slow up abit and its less noticeable.
just listen to Dave a playing jeremy live back in the day, when he gets to the chorus (thinkin of bside of animal here), he somehow slows the song down being to 'fiddly', matt cameron, keeps it solid.
i also thought 2003 performances sounded too messy , to me they seemed to up the anti of the pace and accuracy in 2006, just the way matt counted them in at the shows i went to, it showed they mean business, and it was awesome
leeds 26/08/06....electric
paris 11/09/06.....crushed...but estatic
wembley 18/06/07.....oh yes
'listen...you can hear the sustain...you just hold that note and you can go get a bite whilst its still going'

It also depends on if the song starts with one band member playing a riff then that will dictate the speed of the whole song...REMEMBER KIDS....

yes so maybe its often Stone that starts a song really speedy ?"Ransom paid the Devil, he whispers pleasing words.

good explanation... there's alot to this complexity"Ransom paid the Devil, he whispers pleasing words.

With some songs it is definitely a conscientious decision. Songs like Life Wasted and WWS from Avocado are played faster than on the album, but they are also the same faster speed each show.0

I wish they still played Why Go as slow as they used to. Even Flow is played so fast that its almost a completely different song than it used to be. I like it but sometimes i wished they changed it up and played it slow again.
Given to Fly is another speedy one but i think Ed gets better at singing it every year.0 -
I've always noticed that songs I write end up faster live. Very rarely is something slower live. Usually, when songs are written, they're still new, and slower by default. But once you get the songs down, you feel like kicking it up a notch, especially for an audience.
It's like learning how to walk. You can't do it fast, but once you get it down, you can run. Running fulfills your body far more than walking.
