Defending a hunter here is beyond pathetic.

According to Fish and Game, the shooter told conservation officers he was aiming at a deer and didn't see the cyclist in the background. The investigation is ongoing. It has not yet been decided whether the hunter will be charged.
k, if that's the case, I can't say for sure who is at fault here. if it's a hunting area, shouldn't it be closed to people roaming around for recreation?
Of course he was aming at a deer.  /s

He was super excited to run up and get his trophy to put on his wall.  woot!

Depends on the terrain and time.  The shooting happened right at dusk....who knows what the trail was like that the biker was on.  Again, not defending the hunter but we don't know the whole story.

I've been out of the loop for the last week as I was deer hunting with my dad in Northern Wisconsin where we have a small cabin in the woods.
We have 55 acres of woods and it borders the Nicolet National Forest, part of our land is actually the edge of a large Balsam swamp that continues into the Nicolet, where besides deer, there's black bears, wolves, bobcats and more.  I listened to wolves howl back and forth for about 10 minutes on Saturday morning, about 20 minutes before daylight, that beautiful sound chills my spine every time, then I watched a pair of bald eagles fly around over head, midday.  An awesome sight to see.  Hunting isn't all about shooting whatever it is that your after.  Allot of it is taking in nature.  Anyway, fortunately for us there aren't many people around us where we hunt.
You still have to know your Target and Beyond.
For once I agree with smelly man lol.
There is no excuse for this Hunter, none.  You need to know you're target and beyond.
But it does seem odd to have public recreational bike paths in the same place that they allow public hunting.  That seems bizarre to me, because something like this is bound to happen.  But I put this all on the Hunter you shouldn't be hunting in a public recreational place where there's likely to be other people roaming around.  Even if it's legal, a responsible Hunter wouldn't hunt in such a place.

But the more I think about it, the more it sounds to me like he was shooting at a noise, or movement that he wasn't sure about.  It seems very unlikely to me that he missed the deer he was shooting at, and the bullet just happened to strike somebody on a bicycle in the background.  He certainly wouldn't want to admit that if that was the case.  How embarrassing and reckless.
Well I'm glad that this woman is still alive and I hope she's doing well and I wish her a full recovery.
Are there any updates on the story? I can't find any.
This Hunter should be charged with Reckless discharge of a firearm, and causing injury to a person.  I don't know what the legal terminology of that would be, but he definitely deserves a few charges.

I made a rather odd purchase the other day.
I did get a nice stocky little buck on Saturday evening about 4 p.m.  For me, its not about getting a "trophy deer" that you mount on the wall, for me its about putting some meat in the freezer and having some good camaraderie with my old man at the same time.  I do not hunt for prestige and bragging rights. But whitetail deer can be very difficult to get so when you do get one it is cause for a little celebration so, on the way to the (Bar of course), my dad and I took it up to a butcher shop in town, that is attached to a grocery store.  Then back we went to the bar to celebrate and have a  few "mixers" ;) (local term for a cocktails)  The butcher shop calls you 2 days later when it's done and you go get it and pay for it in the grocery store at the service desk.  (I have learned how to butcher my own deer, have done it a number of times, but it's a long slow tedious process and hard work, so it's worth every penny to me now, to take it somewhere pay $85 and be done with it.)  They bring a grocery cart out to you with the boxes of your meat in it, all nicely wrapped in cellophane just like you would get beef from the meat department at your local grocery store.  While I was waiting for the guy to go and get it, I was standing next to the magazine rack and saw this.
I had to have it of course!! So I purchased my venison meat, and this Rolling Stone Pearl Jam collector's edition magazine at the same time.  I realized that this has nothing to do with America's gun violence as I just thought it was an interesting purchase, the Northwoods girl, or should I say,
(Girl From the North Country) lol, behind the counter looked at me with puzzled eyes when I tossed this magazine on the counter next to the meat invoice. Lol. I said do you like Pearl Jam?  She a 20 something said, "Never heard him.".
    Ha, ha...
I flipped it open and showed her this picture and I said "They're one heck of a fun band you don't know what you're missing."  She replied with a "hughhh??"
    Oh well...

    Happy Thanksgiving!! & Cheers!!

That's horrific. He shot at a woman on private property after dusk without ascertaining what he was actually shooting at. I sure hope charges are forthcoming.

How not charged with a crime?

F**kig tool shot a woman with a handgun thinking it was a deer from over 200 yards away.

If a guy is criminally responsible for drinking and driving and causing a fatality... they're sure as f**k criminally responsible for shooting a woman thinking she was a deer.

    For f**ks sakes.

It's bullshit like this that responsible gun owners like myself and others cringe about.  Because it's all fucking avoidable.  Use your f****** head if you're going to use a gun and hunt.  Pistols are not meant for long range shooting. Sounds to me like he was playing with his gun not actually Hunting.   Shooting something 200 yards away with a pistol for fuck sakes man.  They are not made for that.
Please do not lump all Hunters together with these careless idiots who mistakenly shoot people on bicycles, or think it's playtime when they get a gun in their f***** up hands and shoot at whatever they feel like, 200 yards away.  These people have no business owning a guns and
Both of these dudes should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, throw the books at them, & throw them both in jail and throw away the keys. I'm talking about the guy who shot the girl on the Bicycle too he should be done living in society as well as this guy playing with his pistols.

If you shoot someone in accident you should at least:
    Spend time in jail
Never be allowed to handle own or otherwise possess a gun ever again
Pay compensation to your victim above and beyond medical expenses

These morons will be back hunting next season.

The problem with these fucks, is that they're not actually hunting.  They go out and just shoot at shadows and noises, not giving a flying fuck about responsibility.  The first thing they teach you in gun safety and or hunting programs is that, once you squeeze the trigger, there is no way in hell you can call that bullet back and get a do over.  So make damn sure you are sure about your target before you just let it rip!
I'm cussing a lot today, because non hunters and anti gun advocates lump us all together.  Like a bunch of toothless white supremacist bastards firing away at anything that moves.
I'm trying to show the opposite side to this, and these reckless idiots aren't helping any.
I would lock them both up and throw away the keys.

How is the NRA responsible for this?  They feel the same way I do.
They head all types of gun safety, concealed carry, and hunter education programs.
Unfortunately they haven't come up with a course on how to fix stupid.

Hence the absolute need for significant gun reform.

It's either that or eugenics. As much as it would be fantastic to improve the overall quality of the human being... selective breeding is a much more daunting task than meaningful change.

You are right.  There needs to be some significant reform.  I just don't know what gun reform law would have helped in the case of this hunting area that's the same place as a recreational area that has bike paths.  And this 200 yard pistol shot doesn't make a bit of sense.
There needs to be a few reform laws to prevent idiotic tendencies.  Yes, selective breeding would be good. Then we could phase out some of this nonsense.  So the guy that accidentally shot the girl on the bicycle claiming that he was shooting at a deer, and she just happened to be in the background and got struck, (total bullshit in my opinion) In addition to some quality jail time,  he should also be castrated so that he cannot pass on those dumb genetics that he possesses when he gets released.  On a much more serious note the guy treating his pistol like a toy and shooting stuff at 200 yards with a pistol who killed the lady nothing funny about any of this.  He should be sentenced to life, and be castrated too.  I will write to the NRA and suggest that my donations go towards the castration of people who shoot people accidentally out of stupidity. It will be known as the COIGOA
(Castration Of Irresponsible Gun Owners Act). I think it would be a great deterrent.  You accidentally or mistakenly shoot somebody while you're hunting, or target shooting, I say get out the scissors, pocket knife or whatever.

Your nra membership goes toward lobbying to block any gun legislation that inhibits gun ownership. You pay drectly to arm these stupid idiots. But they aren’t irresponsible gun owners until after they’re irresponsible.

Another “responsible” gun owner, getting ready for that Christmas feast.

Hunter shoots pickup truck after mistaking it for a deer, police say - Fox News https://apple.news/AV2iwqy9USESBIbl3S6lg4w
IS it ok to talk about the millions of hunters that are safe or are we just concentrating on the vast minority?

i hunted last week with my father in law and he safely shot an 8 point buck with a 30.06.  Is that newsworthy?
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

Feel free to start a thread. Did you expect a gold star? Did you call your local news outlets and make the paper or local news channel for bagging an eight point buck with a 30.06? Somehow bagging a pick up is news.
