I'm very sorry Brian. Just from getting to know you a little on here over the last couple years, I'm sure your Father was proud of the stand up person you have become. Hugs and good thoughts from here.0

Thank you all so much, my friends. Your thoughts and love mean very much to me.
So true. Pop had quite a life. He was born into an Amish family but by the time he was a young man had moved into the modern world. Pop was rejected by the military at the start of WWII for having flat feet so he rubbed dirt on the edges of his feet for several days to make them look normal and then left Pennsylvania to enlist in another state where he was accepted and shipped off to the Salomon Islands to serve as an Aviation Machinist's Mate. After graduation from UC Berkeley, he went to work for United Airlines as a aeronautical engineer for nearly 25 years. He played what he called "semi-pro softball" and coached one of my Little League teams. The antithesis of Amish culture, but he was a man of peace and served faithfully in the Presbyterian Church for several decades both as deacon, moderator of the general assembly and sang in Joyful Noise Choir. He was a fine father and faithful husband.lastexitlondon said:

A fantastic journey and a good man.
Thats all we can aspire to.
He was a good guy who always left us with these parting words, "Have fun!"

Brian, I have no idea what to say. All these lovely comments before me. Sounds like you hit the jackpot for parents. Did he have a fav PJ song? I'm sorry for your loss and know you'll continue to honor him as you are know. Good man. RIP.Oh please let it rain today.

Thank you FLA. Pop was a G.I. generation man (it struck me how few of them there are now and one less as of Sunday) so definitely more a Glenn Miller era fan than PJ.FoxyRedLa said:Brian, I have no idea what to say. I thought about what Pearl Jam song fit him the most and it's a toss up between "Better Man" (yes, hard to find a better man) and, because he wished almost more than anything he could fly so, "Given to Fly".
My Mom was a bit more into contemporary music. In fact, one weekend while I was recovering from hernia surgery she sat down with me and watched the Neil Young and Crazy Horse "The Complex Sessions" DVD with me and dug it. I played my acoustic guitar version of "My Heart" at her memorial.

Sorry for your loss Brian.. I lost my father when I was 20 but we always felt better telling stories. If you ever feel up to it, I'm sure we'd all love to hear more about him someday.0

Yes, M., stories are great. My sister just forwarded the following story to me. One of Pop's big projects with Unites Air Lines was working on specs for the Boeing 747 during its development up in Seattle (he made many a trip up there to work with Boeing). As the article pointed out, today marked "the final time that the airline [United] will use the massive jetliner for commercial travel." My sister told me she figured somehow Pop made it (figuratively speaking) on the last flight to be with our mom in paradise. Pretty sweet.
