Neigh.
Spring carnival here in my home town.
It's all about horses, betting, fashion.
I hate this time of the year. Why do humans think it is okay to exploit horses for profit?

We eat them, so I guess watching them run around a track isn’t so bad when compared to the fate of a pig or cow.0

I mean to hurt a horse by whipping it to make it run faster doesn't sit well with me.Adelaide 17/11/2009, Melbourne 20/11/2009, Sydney 22/11/2009, Melbourne (Big Day Out Festival) 24/01/20140

my band played at a horse track a few years ago. we were the entertainment playing music in between the races. it is a pretty big deal around here and that was considered a "great" gig to have.
during the first race a horse broke down and had to be euthanized essentially right in front of us. i felt awful after that. we had been booked to play there 5 or 6 times that summer. it was the first time we played there. we canceled the remaining shows because i did not feel right making money off of these animals that literally risk their lives every time they enter the gates.

If horses could run without jockeys it would be humane0

We also have jumps racing which has higher death rates.
It sickens me that people don't care about the horses, it's all about winning on bets, dressing up in fashion, getting drunk.Adelaide 17/11/2009, Melbourne 20/11/2009, Sydney 22/11/2009, Melbourne (Big Day Out Festival) 24/01/20140 -

money power makes people do crazy things. to make matters worse, casinos have adjoined some race tracks resulting in increases purses resulting in more cheating/doping. its a horrible situation and its not limited to horses (greyhounds, even dogsledding!) i know alittle bit about the horse racing business and it isnt pretty. like anything else money has ruined, it has to get really bad before corrective action is taken. if you do a search this topic has been discussed before, might not want to look it up thou, horrible videos.
on a positive note there are some organizations that are making some in-roads, the one Im involved with makes it mandatory for race horse owners to contribute to a fund (per race entry) that helps horses de-stress and enjoy life after racing on the farm.

I think it's stupid. how is racing an animal a sport that gets credited to the guy essentially holding on for dear life? seinfeld had a great bit on this in his "I'm Telling You For The Last Time" dvd. I'm paraphrasing:
"I think if horses knew that if they tripped during the race they'd get their brains blown out, the race would be quite different".
Horse #1: take it easy everyone, don't run too fast, everyone finishes, everyone's happy. you come first, I'll place, everybody's good".By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0 -
I enjoy horse racing and dog racing.
I would think that cock fighting and dog fighting are inhumane.0 -
i love Horse Racing and it's Breeders Cup weekend this weekend so the best of the best are at Del Mar Friday and Saturday. Will definitely make some nice bets this weekend. bring it on.0

Neigh. I don't put it in the same category as some of the many other ways we exploit animals - it's much better than most such things - but it's still bad enough for me to personally boycott it as a form of entertainment, though I don't judge those who enjoy it (as I would those who enjoy, say, bullfighting or something), and I don't put it in the same category of anything that involves the exploitation of wild animals either. I have attended horse races in the past, which is why I know I'm a neigh. That doesn't mean I didn't think it was fun at the time. I did. It was really fun, especially since I once won 7 out of 8 races - it was crazy. That doesn't change my final decision on the matter though. FWIW, for full disclosure, I put equestrian in yet another category. I don't feel that is as bad, knowing what I do about the differences in care, physical consequences for the horses, how the industries are run, etc. I don't find the two sports comparable (and I do know enough about both to judge I think).
