    A Tom Petty show was the last event I ever attended at the original Boston Garden. It was 1995, a few months before it was torn down and replaced by the new arena next door. As a Boston kid and a lifelong Celtics fan, that was a big deal. I've always cherished that memory. This is such a sad day.

    I got to see PJ open for Petty in 2006 at Summerfest in WI. I will never forget watching Free Fallin' with fireworks going off over the lake. Also who can forget Eddie singing American Girl one night with Tom and The Waiting the other night. I grew up with Petty and the Heartbreakers as I'm sure most/all of you did. Terrible news.

    Just saw on newscast reports of Tom"s death were retracted but did not hear the details. All the best wishes to him

    TMZ is usually spot on. They verify things before reporting stuff like this. They are indeed a very credible news source. People assume they're not just because they cover entertainment news, but they are actually very good with due diligence. This is their wheelhouse.

    It still isn't being reported anywhere else with corroboration.  Still holding out wishful thinking.
    CBS News has reported that he's dead. :( Other outlets are reporting on it too (though only CBS has actually said he's dead so far).

    Well CBS jumped the gun for some reason, obviously... geez, I hope this doesn't draw out for him and his family, while the world waits with bated breath. That would be tough.

    It's all true except for him actually being dead, as far as I can tell. I think it was CBS who first announced the death (who knows why - I didn't see it anywhere else before they posted it), and maybe the LAPD reposted that report? Something like that. Got a little messy, which is a shame.

    I don't know what hope for.  It gives you some hope, but if he was without oxygen for too long, I'm not sure.... :(
