I have an engineering degree (2 of them) but I am not a PE (licensed professional engineer) cause my work doesn't benefit from it. Someone doing their own research and sending an email with "Engineer" it is isn't violating any law. Hell - my facebook, resume, etc all would be violating the law.
It only matters for certifying things like structural components, etc. They clearly are a bunch of asshats. Now, I don't know the full story so maybe he has done more to piss them off, but this is a childish response.hippiemom = goodness0 -

Yes, a qualified person. You're grossly oversimplifying traffic signal timings, as each light phase is optimized in conjunction with those immediately neighbouring it. This is substantially more involved than using a stopwatch to arbitrarily decide that a) the phase should be extended, and b) the specific amount the phase should be extended by. In two engineering degrees, I would've hoped they'd have covered causality and risk mitigation. They did in the one engineering degree I earned - including our course on traffic signal optimization.cincybearcat said:

Yes I'm oversimplifying it, but this is just a study...no need for an PE license to perform a study. I have plenty of experience with risk thanks for the underhanded dig. Oh - I took a traffic engineering course too...long ago. Easiest engineering class I had. I only brought up the engineering degrees because I still refer to myself as an engineer (heck, it's been in my job titles) despite not having a PE. Now, I wouldn't ever claim to be a PE. According to the article there is a difference between an engineering degree and an engineer. That would be like someone who finishes law school calling himself a lawyer. There are required certificates and exams to become a lawyer, even if you have a law degree. Now you may be more than capable of offering legal advice with a law degree, but you cannot present yourself as a lawyer until you pass the bar exam and get the proper license.cincybearcat said:

And if your job doesn't require a PE and the employees working on the project aren't licensed, I am willing to bet they don't advertise themselves as a licensed engineer. That is like an unlicensed plumber will call himself a "handyman" because he doesn't have a plumber's license where it is required. Selling yourself as a plumber would be illegal if you don't have the proper credentials. But calling yourself a handyman who has experience with and willing to work on plumbing is fine (depending on the job).0 -

After major flooding in 2013 in my city and neighborhood I had FEMA knock on my door and offer assistance.
Lucky for me I didn't need it. But appreciated the unsolicited offer.0 -
Just to clarify - I am very aware that someone that isn't a PE representing themselves as such is against the law. I just think it was extremely silly in this case. He wasn't selling his services to the public. Just very petty.hippiemom = goodness0

I would agree if they responded with a fine after the first letter, that would be very petty.
I don't know much about engineering or PEs, but was just reading about it for a few minutes. So now I'm an expert.
It seems like the laws vary state to state as to what is or isn't allowed by an unlicensed engineer. In many cases it seems there is a difference between signing something as "engineer" vs "PE."
What why I dont feel sorry for him is he was asked to stop. They essentially told him based on his formal correspondence they inferred he was licensed. And since he was not to avoid using that title in this circumstance. That seems completely fair for a state that regulates this field of work, to also regulate who uses what title related to it. Seems fair that he was given a warning. Seems fair that when he ignored that warning he was fined not for impersonating an engineer, but practicing without a license. Because it seems like even formal investigative work in that state requires a PE seal, and to present his findings as a professional engineer broke that law.0 -
