I spotted a semi-icognito Ed at the NYC Tibetan Freedom Concert (think Yield-era black hair + a scruffy beard) and followed him to a booth. I said hi and "thanks for the music, it changed my life". He replied with a firm handshake, looked me directly in the eye and sternly said "No you did it, you changed your life." It was a short, awkward conversation and I felt bad about how awestruck and mumbly I was. So, risking being perceived as a total lunatic, I followed him some more, staying about 10 feet away so as not to freak him out too bad. He paused after a few minutes and gave me a sideways glance. I walked over and apologized for my awkwardness, he laughed and then we shared a wonderful 10 minute nerdy fan conversation about U2, who had just played. We talked about how their set didn't include certain songs we had both hoped to hear, he talked about how hard it is to choose just a few songs for festivals. Funny thing is, none of PJ was on the bill for the two day show, but Ed and Mike played a short set the next day and he never once mentioned the surprise. Totally humble, regular guy, no airs at all, despite me being somewhat stalker-ish for a few minutes. I was very pleased with myself until I met up with my wife a few minutes later and she rolled her eyes at my story. Lo these many years later, she's still rolling her eyes at my stories.

Mike and Jeff Central Park 2015 sound check Global Citizen. Extremely cool guys took pics with both.

Was there a bald cop there getting photo bombed by Eddie? (at least that was the picture he sent me) My friend who's a cop said he heard "live-sounding" PJ from afar, walked through central park, flashed his badge a couple times and sure enough, there was PJ doing sound checks. Said he's proud to say that the one time he abused the use of his authority was to meet Eddie.
I think so, that weekend was a pretty special one. Got to go to Ed Sullivan Theatre for the Colbert show, a real nice sunny afternoon in Central Park sound checking with PJ (meeting Jeff and Mike) and finishing with the Global Citizen show.....awesome experience. ;)

That's actually a really intense response re: you being the one who changed your life. I love that. Artists who write soul-shaking, life-changing music hear the testimony "Your music/This song changed my life" quite often, but I've never heard anyone answer that way. I love that. It's been awhile since I heard something new that once again upped my respect for Ed or this band, but that just bumped it way up once again.

    Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad this resonated with you! When he said those words, I was deeply touched and completely caught off guard. Some of Ed's childhood struggles mirror my own. Hearing those words from him was, in some way, permission to start working on my issues. Couldn't have come at a better time in my life.

Never met any of them, But Eddie took a picture of me outside of his bus at Oracle Arena 2013 Lightning Bolt Tour. I was just looking at photos from that concert, And found one of him pointing into the crowd during his Tambourine giveaway, on Pinterest by photographer Thias Campos. I would really like to know how I can get this photo. He was actually pointing at me. And I would love nothing more than to get a copy of this photo. But don't know how to contact Thias Campos. If anyone has any info, I'd really appreciate it. See ya all at Dana Point.

I had the privilege of meeting EV in Boston last year. It was a random occurrence so I just asked him if he had a second. I thanked him and told him that their work has had a profound impact on my life. We ended up having a conversation about families, wives, kids, and baseball. It was just him and I standing there talking like two normal dudes. He couldn't have be more humble, gracious, and down to earth. Definitely an experience I won't soon forget.

I've met Ed twice.  Once before a solo show on the street in Nashville.  He was very nice and gave me a pick and shook my hand.  I've met everyone else once and it was pretty quick.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

I met Jeff. He was in a really terrible mood because it was at the end of a tour and he was bagged and cranky for the whole show anyway, but he'd also just had his RNDM mask stolen by some asshole about 2 minutes before I approached him, so was extra pissy. I was drunk, some other drunk people (autograph hounds I think) encouraged me to crash the green room, so I did, and then I accidentally interrupted a conversation he was having and then I just started babbling. It wasn't great. He did still sign my RNDM album though. He could have just as easily told me to fuck off. So yeah, good guy. :giggle:

  • If I ever meet him I pray on everything holy that Ed does not give me guitar picks. It just seems gimmicky almost or just very weird to do out in public. Yes, I get overall its a kind gesture and in a show setting it would be awesome, but not on the streets. I would so much rather just a handshake or a few words exchanged.
nah yer wrong. ed handing out picks on the street is ok by me. it's not like he's carrying them around everywhere he goes...right?
  • You guys/gals are so
lucky.  My wife asked me one year what do you want for Xmas? Me: have a beer with Eddie Vedder. (I'm buying)

Met Ed twice - once mid show in Osaka, Japan 1995 during the Porch "jam". He had climbed up into the upper balcony and I actually helped pull him up and get through the crowd. The crowd was going nuts and he was trying to calm people down and just hang out in the crowd. I was in the military at the time and at the show with my buddy. There were a couple of other Americans near us, and when Ed saw them and heard us speaking English, took a moment to shake our hands and we walked with him down the hall until security escorted him back to the stage to finish out the song. Was my first PJ show, that was obviously kind of a "freak-out" moment! Also met him in L.A. in 2011 after a solo show.

I also got to meet Matt in Las Vegas in 2001 after a Wellwater Conspiracy show (that's where my profile picture is from.) It was interesting because there were a couple of local opening bands, which it seemed most of the local people were there for, because it was pretty packed, but by the time Wellwater came on around 1 a.m., there were maybe 50 people left. It was a small local bar which closed several years ago, and I imagine most of the early crowd didn't even know who Wellwater was. After the show, I introduced myself to Matt, we talked drumming for a little while, and John McBain took the picture of us. I even helped them load their van afterwards. :)

Osaka, Japan (2/21/95), San Diego (7/10/98), Las Vegas (10/22/00), San Diego (10/25/00), Las Vegas (6/6/03), Las Vegas (7/6/06), Los Angeles (7/9/06), VH1 Rock Honors (7/12/08), Ed Solo (7/8/11), Ed Solo (11/1/12), Los Angeles (11/23/13)

Been lucky enough to meet everybody but Ed and they were all very cool. Just shook their hands, told them I was a big fan, thanked them for the music and moved along. Mike was after a show in Seattle and he was on the street signing for a bunch of people when I met him so I got his signature. Everybody else was in Chicago last year before the Wrigley shows. I got a lot out of just getting to shake their hands, look them in the eye and say thank you for producing the soundtrack of my life.

I met Uncle Neil back in 09 when he did a complete Canadian tour. I actually had Mirror Ball playing in my car, seen him and his tour manager walking up Queens road here in St. John's. Myself and my wife stopped the car to say hi, he stuck his head in and laughed and said good taste in music...hehe. He asked us to go for a walk with him, so had to take him up on the offer. Talked everything of the love of cars, to his Linconvolt, other artists, to the upcoming shows. He must have asked 5 times if we had tickets to the shows, with every response that we had GA's for both. He is very chill but did get annoyed easy with the amount of attention he was getting from star gazers
so I guess your favourite Neil track is "Walk With Me"?

Hugh, I resemble those meeting Ed and Jeff statements. I met Ed after a solo show in LA and could hardly talk and met Jeff in the Vegas airport right before Binaual came out and chatted him up for several minutes like we were old pals. It was pretty cool as he was giving me insights into Binaural before it got released. I felt pretty special.

I met Mike in Boston 2006. Me and a few buddies were having lunch on a patio the day of the show when one of my buddies started smacking the table like he was having a seizure. He called out “Mike!” I turned around and Mike was walking towards us. I must say the rest was kind of a blur because I got star struck, but he asked us our names and talked for a couple minutes. When he left he said nice to meet you Sean..........my name is John. But I didn’t hold it against him.  =)

During the Wrigley '13 show my wife and I were forced in the VIP tunnel for the storm. Jam packed like sardines, there was several storage boxes for Matt's gear with his name and Pearl Jam written all over it. I leaned up against them, took some pictures and posted on facebook I met with the band as a joke. To my shock, everyone bought it, like I'd pose with the gear instead of the band.
But that was as close as I got.

I always thought I'd like to meet Jeff, being a bass player, but honestly, and to his own admission, sometimes he can be kind of moody and/or private, whereas I picture Stone always being up for a casual conversation. Kinda like Mike.

Stone was very chatty. My wife and I sat at the bar with him for a few hours, along with other members of BRAD. I asked him a thousand questions about WTDP and Riot Act of course.
