REM- music really misses them

Listening to the 25th anniversary on Apple Music now. Not really digging the demo's and understand why the band might dislike them.FR181798 said:I read that the band cant stand to listen to a lot of the Out of time demos. They were demos and rejected for a reason etc. I dont see the point in some of the stuff that labels put out these days. The definitive versions usually make the record.

I have less and less spare time to listen to a record, get up and turn the side over, etc,.bflynn1 said:

Rolling Stone magazine Germany had an exclusive free REM 7 inch recently if anyone is interested. I would have bought a few but the only way to pay was by IMO to the UK which my bank charges an extra £10 for. Hoping to find someone in Germany to pick me up a copy.
There has been similar exclusive 7s in the past. Oasis, Cash, Dylan. I imported a few Dylan and sold the extras on but was lucky to break even and Dylan has a bigger fan base than REM. REM singles don't sell so well.0 -
Out Of Time is favorite record by anyone, ever. The re-issue is great, I love the demos. As a musician myself though, I definitely get why they don't like to listen back to them.0

I was fortunate to see REM on every tour from 1983 until the end. IMHO, they are one of the greatest American bands.
I have been listening to Live at The Olympia all morning....a great representation of their amazing catalog.0 -
I almost was able to keep up with you JOEJOEJOE, I saw them on every tour from Fables through Up. You are lucky that you saw every single tour!JOEJOEJOE said:I was fortunate to see REM on every tour from 1983 until the end. IMHO, they are one of the greatest American bands.

Despite having seen the band int it's early years and being a long-time fan, I'd never seen all of Tourfilm until today. I picked up a nice, sealed VHS and, much to my delight, my VCR player still works and I watched the film this afternoon. Might fine stuff there!

For a band that broke up they sure still do a lot of interviews (mostly about reissues). It gives me hope that they still talk and get along but each interview I listen to they always slam the door on future shows and new music. Oh well.
I don't understand how they wouldn't want to play a few one off shows for fun each year. Hopefully Pearl Jam doesn't get over their music and performing any time soon.0 -

And Mike Mills answered immediately and said "Because to keep all that true, we can't." (Or maybe "We won't"). They laughed but yes, it was another shut down of the idea. They also talked about how proud they are of the fact that they quit while they were in a good place and still very proud of their music and their performances.
I disagree though that it's because REM "got over the music and performing", Mills and Buck still make music and play quite a bit. Not sure what Stipe is up to most of the time, although I bet he makes music, he just doesn't share it. And we all know that my favorite member Bill Berry is a farmer mainly, and a dad, but I bet he makes music now and then too. I think I read an article where his son plays some instruments, so maybe we'll get a great father-son act out of that LOL! But I don't think they got over music and playing, they just decided to quit while they were ahead and not be pulled back for nostalgia. And if they really want to jam, I'm sure they can and maybe they do, just not in front of an audience or recording equipment.0 -

I meant were over performing REM tunes. It just seems strange. What is the harm in playing a few shows together unless they really don't like it? Perhaps they don't think it is right to play shows without making new music.0 -

it must be maddening to be a fan and not understand why they broke up. how often do you hear of that in the music business? yes, we still like each other. yes, we're all still alive. yes, we still like making music. then why not reform? cuz we don't WANNA.By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0
