police kill unarmed black man

I see a big difference in the way that constitutional right is being used. I know several people who carry for various, valid reasons. I have been with some of them on several occasions when they were pulled over or stopped by police. The first words out of their mouth EVERY time is "I have a permit to carry. My permit is in this pocket and my gun is in that pocket" while sticking their hands as high in the air as they can. You are going to compare that to someone who illegally carries without a permit and doesn't follow police orders and say they aren't given the same constitutional right to carry? I'm not generalizing all black people, I'm basing this off the majority of incidents that have been in the news recently involving a gun-or where he was thought to have a gun.eddiec said:

If you are a black man in America, exercising your constitutional right to keep and bear arms can be fatal. You might think the National Rifle Association and its amen chorus would be outraged, but apparently they believe Second Amendment rights are for whites only.
In reaching that conclusion I am accepting, for the sake of argument, the account given by the Charlotte police of how they came to fatally shoot Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday. Scott’s killing prompted two nights of violent protests that led North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) to declare a state of emergency. Last Friday, police in Tulsa shot and killed Terence Crutcher — an unarmed black man — and the two incidents gave tragic new impetus to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Scott’s relatives claim he was unarmed as well. But let’s assume that police are telling the truth and he had a handgun. What reason was there for officers to confront him?
North Carolina, after all, is an open-carry state. A citizen has the right to walk around armed if he or she chooses to do so. The mere fact that someone has a firearm is no reason for police to take action.
This is crazy, in my humble opinion. I believe that we should try to save some of the 30,000-plus lives lost each year to gun violence by enacting sensible firearms restrictions — and that the more people who walk around packing heat like Wild West desperados, the more deaths we will inevitably have to mourn. In its wisdom, however, the state of North Carolina disagrees.

In an open carry state that does not give you the right to refuse to put down your weapon when ordered by police. Many of the details are in dispute so it is hard to say, but there are still many restrictions on open carry. Typically only certain guns and calibers are allowed, and need to be clearly visible in an open carry scenario. If he was in fact holding the gun as some have stated, that would not be "open carry."0 -
I was in the military and an officer at a state prison. Training across the board was if you are going to discharge your firearm, it is for lethal purposes. I could imagine that a whole new world of possible scenarios would open up if training consisted of a warning shot or to shoot to injure. Placing shots on target is difficult enough. Adding the possibility of shooting to injure, I believe would lead to more missed targets, thus more possible collateral damage, i.e.: bystanders. Would also allow the suspect an opportunity to return shots on an officer. I understand the train of thought but the alternative possibles could do more harm to more people. It's simple people. Cop says put the gun down. You drop the gun. Cop says get down on the ground. You get on the ground.mcgruff10 said:

Cops train for those scenarios as well. Mentally ill people are not legally allowed to posses a firearmdignin said:

I cant think of a single scenario where a deaf person needs to be displaying his gun in public. And where he wouldn't be able to figure out through body language or other means than the cops point their guns at him are wanting him to put his gun down.
If that is the case, then he lost a little more than his hearing in that accident-and again, shouldn't have a gun to begin with.

Maybe I misinterpreted your previous post. I took it as a deaf, mentally ill, or a disabled person were more likely to be shot by the police because of their handicap than an ordinary person. Not because of their handicap but because of their reaction.mace1229 said:I cant think of a single scenario where a deaf person needs to be displaying his gun in public. does anybody have any reliable data to answer the following:
how many people were killed by cops this year?
of that total:
how many were white?
how many were black?
how many had weapons on them?
how many had prior criminal records?
how many were on drugs or mentally ill?
female?
male?
I was just interested in the breakdown.

Yeah, my bad, I was on my phone when I read the initial comment. Didn't see the "drop the gun" part. My response was intended for an unarmed black man getting shot. But fuck me right? I thought I was on the "police kill unarmed black man" thread. Hard to keep all these threads straight.Stickman12 said:

How so? According to these numbers: 12-14% of the population represent 28% of the people killed by police. (173 / 173+111+325)pjalive21 said:

nice research bud. so only 42 were unarmed but of the 42 we aren't sure how many were under the influence of drugs.
breaking the 2016 numbers down further:
blacks make up 12.2% of the u.s. population but account for 24.4% shooting deaths by police.
hispanic: 15.6% of shooting deaths by police and 12.5% of the american population.
white: 63.7% of the total u.s. population and accounts for 45.9% of shooting deaths by police.

Work out the math. 12% Americans are black. African Americans make up 24% of the deathspjalive21 said:

But honestly, when it comes down to the logistics of it, it shouldn't matter if they are deaf or mentally ill regardless. And yes, this is titled as an "unarmed" thread, but the question of a gun has come up in both recent cases, and has been brought up here as a result.
Lethal force should only be used when the threat is imminent and poses a real danger to others. If that is the case that threat needs to be eliminated regardless of their mental background. That doesn't mean I wouldn't feel absolutely horrible for the situation. And in all reality, I think knowing someone is mentally ill would in many cases have a higher threshold for being considered a lethal threat. But just because someone is mentally ill doesn't mean they cant overpower you and take your gun. In fact don't some metal illnesses just increase paranoia and not affect physical abilities of the person?Post edited by mace1229 on0
