Everyone thinks that the philly shows were the greatest thing since sliced bread and they had 12 repeats.
seven songs from ten, corduroy, dte, gtf, rvm and mym.
    that's worse than nyc!!!

That's because they played Ten. Toronto will be quite the opposite I'm thinking. Hell, they didn't even play a single Binaural song and just one Riot song over two nights at MSG.

That's great that Eddie is feeling Ten and feeling the hits, but the bottom line is that some of us are fans because of Ten, some of us are fans because we love the entire catalogue. If you went that night, you saw many repeats from the past few shows, and many hits. When, in the past, they've really made MSG shows special with some special songs. They didn't do that this time. That's a disappointment, and it shows a lack of effort in terms of the setlist - not the effort with which they play their songs.

PJ is gonna play songs from Ten and VS. every night.

Nobody is saying not to. The debate is playing the same song on a (two night) stand. A few, sure. A handful, OK I'm sure most would be fine with that. Eleven...

We got the same two songs from Yield as MSG1. 1 song from No Code. None from Binaural. All or None, which had been played in Philly. None from Avocado. None from Backspacer.

From my count, they played six songs that hadn't been played in Philly or MSG1 - that includes Last Kiss and Sirens.

I don't understand people who research set lists. That's obsessive in a way I do not wish to be. My friends make fun of me for flying away to one or two shows per tour. I tell them that there are fans way wackier than I am but they don't believe me. This thread is my evidence.

So it's cool to fly across the country to a rock concert but it's not cool to check out rock concert setlists?

    Got it... lol
It's okay to check out setlists as a curiosity. To research them as a measure of the concert experience is foreign to me. I can honestly say that when I go to a show, there might be one song I'd like to hear -- because I like the song and it fits my mood. But the day after the show, I could probably only name five songs I remember hearing. I have to check the setlist to see what songs I heard. In the moment, I'm so caught up, I'm not comparing my show to something else. That's my experience and I don't understand the importance of critiquing the band because of the songs they play. Maybe the problem isn't the band.
To each his own, but Pearl Jam has for a long time been regarded as a band that constantly changes up their setlists every night. It doesn't seem like this is the case in recent years. I get what you're saying about being caught up in the moment of the show, but with this band the 'strength of the setlist' has for many, been a huge part of the live experience.

The last few arena shows I've been to have all probably had 60-70% of the same songs. (Maybe I need to take a break for a couple of years, I'll gladly own up to the role I play in this).

It's been brought up (here or in another thread) that they are starting to feel like a nostalgia act, and I don't think that's an unfair assessment.

They're still the greatest live act out there, but IMO it's ok to compare setlists for this band.
    This guy's got it right.

Too many hits at MSG. Binaural in Toronto? Fucking boring. Pearl Jam needs to stop mailing it in.

As i already said - mail it in is being misconstrued - it was regarding a lack of effort regarding their ability and willingness to play different songs in that run in Philly and MSG, not whether or not they're playing with effort.

Yeah their setlists are lame. And too many boring guests like Sting too. Phish is so much better.

I'm not sure what your point is with all of that. The fact still remains that it was a greatest hits setlist, and I think its healthy to discuss that, especially with a band that has developed a rabid following in incredibly large part due to its setlist variety. If they played the majority of the same songs every night, people wouldn't go to multiple shows.

Sure. Discuss away. I'll step out of this one. I will say I would've loved to be at both MSG shows and couldn't be more jealous of the Toronto set.

Personally I would have hated the toronto set as I am not a fan of binaural. yeah I really like grievance and parting ways but there's too many duds in there for me. If I had brought my wife to this show she would have been bored as hell and probably would not want to go to another show for a while. I'm guessing 75% of the audience had no clue what was going on or even cared about it.

Well that's a shame cause it's a fucking brilliant record. And I personally know a ton of people that would've loved every second of Toronto. I got several texts while binaural was happening last night saying "holy shit!" I think they do a phenomanol job of mixing hits/rarities/covers to keep people happy and engaged which is one of the reasons their live show gets so much respect.

If you're going to tell me MSG2 was a good mix of hits/rarities/covers...

    The second encore looked good?

Outside of Driven to Tears, they played Alive and Lightning Bolt in the 2nd encore of MSG1, and played Sonic Reducer, Baba, and Ledbetter in the 2nd encore of Philly. So, that's incredibly weak in my opinion.

Smile? In My Tree? Satan's Bed? HTI? Mankind? You? STBC? Breakerfall?

It s a brilliant record to some but to others it s pretty weak. Binaural and riot act are their two weakest albums imo

To each their own man. Sure, there are a ton of songs I'd rather hear but I love the Police so Driven w/Sting would've been fucking amazing to me and I never tire of Baba, Sonic, or Alive. I also love Lightning Bolt (best song off the record after Pendulum for me) so I wouldn't call it weak.

ok hated is a strong word. disliked?
but in all seriousness, I would have been pissed if they played binaural in a row at a show I attended. That album is just not my cup of tea.

Gotcha. Its definitely the most different record of theirs. But man musically it has a lot of depth and in my opinion is some of their best work. My favorite three...1. No Code 2. Yield 3. Binaural
