“At night we can hear them screaming, but we’re not allowed to do anything about it,” the Marine’s father, Gregory Buckley Sr., recalled his son telling him before he was shot to death at the base in 2012. He urged his son to tell his superiors. “My son said that his officers told him to look the other way because it’s their culture.”*

Hard to believe our military is there to fight the Taliban and provide security yet have to do nothing in stopping the raping of boys and girls there. Many soldiers are relieved of their duties for not looking the other way, this is rediculous.

    Unfortunately this is not a new issue.
    The U.S. military has had to deal with this ugliest of culture clashes since 2001.

    People have tried to deal with this to no avail.
    Apparently it has been part of the Afghan culture for centuries.

    Guess this is another case of knowing when to pick your battles.

    I agree with GF this has been going on for centuries. Callen yes it is fucked up but at least in the west it is not condoned, in places like Afghanistan it is the norm.

    Bravo, Thirty. Exactly right. Sure we have some fucked up Americans like Jared and priests referenced by Callen, but it isn't tolerated or institutionalized (except by the church), and is dealt with swiftly. dignin asked Political Correctness or Politics? I think it is both. Politically we were/are on a misguided adventure in the Middle East, and apparently make necessary concessions in the name of diplomacy. But political correctness does have something to do with this as well. It is drilled into us that if we are to be a more enlightened people, we need to embrace cultural differences, and not speak ill of other cultures. Accept and respect our differences and learn to live together. I call bullshit on that notion when we're talking about men sodomizing young boys and having it dismissed as "cultural". It's fucking sick, twisted, criminal, and evil. It should be called out, condemned, and fought. If I were a soldier there (which would never happen in a million years), I would have been shipped back to the states for insubordination, disobeying a direct order, and assault and battery after putting the butt of my weapon into the head of the sodomizer. Zero tolerance. Cultural differences be damned in this case.

    ??? I get that you try to be even-handed, and sometimes play devil's advocate a little bit. But your defense or dismissal of pedophilia is a little disturbing to me.

    Or maybe the casting of stones was a cultural reference to a form of punishment being practiced there. In which case, I embrace that cultural practice if the sodomizer is the target of those stones.

    I have read that this behaviour (sexual abuse of little boys) is outrageously common and largely accepted in Afghanistan. That is so fucked up, I'm sure I don't have to describe my disgust here. But is it legal there too???? If not, then the military really ARE pigs.
