Just gotta suck for republicans when their platform of guns, gays, environment and immigration is counter to the Pope. He's being threatened by "Catholic" Republicans to not discuss climate change, guns etc when he addresses congress. Republicans are scared as Shit that their Godliness platform will be busted for what it is. A sham.

    I particularly like this quote: "I'm always concerned about those who are bringing spiritual messages that step too far over the line in terms of political issues," said Sen. Dan Coats, an Indiana Republican and Presbyterian.

    Others said similar messages. Interesting that they feel it's inappropriate for the pope to mix the religious and political spheres. I wonder if Coats would be similarly concerned about those in the political arena stepping too far over the line into religious issues.

    Most Republican politicians these days seem to pander to the Christian right and the Christian right takes the attitude that Jesus is going to swoop back down and whisk all the good believers and take them to heaven and believing that somehow makes it OK to give the planet a good fucking over so when we see someone like Inhofe say "I think it's totally inappropriate that the Pope is weighing in on all the real sensitive, far-left issues," I'm more than ever convinced that "far-left" means "take care of the planet, take care of the people ON the planet". And that the Pope cares about these things? Yeah! Right on! Go Pope Francis!

    I am so glad something Christian is aligning with peace loving socialist pinko liberals. We are anti death penalty. Medicine for the poor. Just never understood how republicans claimed the virtue card. Yeah abortion. Guess we could work on that one to minimize it's use. Science will fix this I'm sure. Republican war mongers are then doomed.

    So this guy now represents liberals (or at least is being praised by the left)? What about reproductive rights (not just abortion, but birth control). Women in the priesthood. Gays in the priesthood. Gay marriage - remember just a few months ago that the Irish vote for gay marriage was a "defeat for humanity".

    I'm guessing neither this pope's views, nor that church's doctrine is a liberal's wet dream. I think it is safe to say that this church is probably out of touch with the views of many on both sides of the divide. I don't know how someone with conservative views can support this church (and by extension, this pope). But I also don't know how someone with liberal views can either.

    The fact that we have a Pope today who promotes progressive views (as in progress, moving forward) is simple amazing. He's one man, no doubt a man with imperfections, but much of which Pope Francis stands up for is the kind of moving forward I've been working and waiting to see happen for a LONG time. Happy to see it happening at this level.

    That's just it. By no means is he perfect......but he is moving forward on some of the most important progressive issues facing humans today. Climate change and income inequality being a few. The man walks the talk unlike many Christians.

    I for one can give him a pass on the smaller shit like the ones jeffbr has referenced.
