i heard the satanic ritual involves chanting "yes we can!!" over and over again while listening to stairway to heaven backwards.

And I thought stairway to heaven forward was bad enough.

Yes, Page! A gentleman, a master and a legend. Love him in "It Might Get Loud" too!

Why, it would not surprise me in the least if the Pope rocks out to a little Zep now and then!

I'm not a republican, but I am religious and I think most people really have no clue that there are a lot of religious people out there whose beliefs do not conform to what is attributed to them by religion-haters.

Think republicans are digging themselves a hole.

I am so glad something Christian is aligning with peace loving socialist pinko liberals. We are anti death penalty. Medicine for the poor. Just never understood how republicans claimed the virtue card. Yeah abortion. Guess we could work on that one to minimize it's use. Science will fix this I'm sure. Republican war mongers are then doomed.

So this guy now represents liberals (or at least is being praised by the left)? What about reproductive rights (not just abortion, but birth control). Women in the priesthood. Gays in the priesthood. Gay marriage - remember just a few months ago that the Irish vote for gay marriage was a "defeat for humanity".

I'm guessing neither this pope's views, nor that church's doctrine is a liberal's wet dream. I think it is safe to say that this church is probably out of touch with the views of many on both sides of the divide. I don't know how someone with conservative views can support this church (and by extension, this pope). But I also don't know how someone with liberal views can either.
Never said he represents liberals. Not my point. It's republicans claim to represent Christianity and family values. And they are criticizing popes values.

Many liberals don't believe but the love and protect the planet and poor align with popes message.

The popes go through a satanic ritual when being appointed as the new pope. God only knows what that white smoke we see is.

Google it (since I know I'll be asked for links)

Can't trust everyone who claims to be religious. Wish I could but I can't

Not sponge worthy ah ah I mean google worthy.

Ohhhhhhhh, boy. If his opening remarks are any indication of things to come over the next few days, the right is not going to be happy.

He did touch on the institution of marriage

I see what you're saying. I agree that he is stirring things up, and I think he's been the most interesting and progressive pope I've seen in my lifetime. But for me, he still presides over the largest organized pedophilia ring in the world. They have unmarried, celibate dudes counselling couples about marriage. They have massive wealth and the trappings of wealth for the sake of pomp and circumstance, while portions of their flock starve. They do missionary work and convince these poor, under-educated people to continue to reproduce. They actively campaign against many progressive initiatives (like gay marriage). And with all of the rituals, mythologies, and bizzaro ceremonies, I don't think he has much to offer me. So for a number of reasons, while I think he's the most progressive pope we've seen, it is all relative. I give kudos to the guy for doing something, but it is a stretch to think that he will have the ability to affect the kind of change that will bring the church into the 21st century.

I find the Pope very interesting. He talks about climate change and he's anti death penalty and "let's help the poor." I don't expect him to allow women to be priests or say "hooray for gay marriage," but he isn't all about negativity. And I find that refreshing.

I agree with the notion that the Pope's #1 concern should not necessarily be political but when I see a quote like the one that follows, I have to say I would consider voting for Francis if he ran for office:

“Each son or daughter of a given country has a mission, a personal and social responsibility. Your own responsibility as members of Congress is to enable this country, by your legislative activity, to grow as a nation. You are the face of its people, their representatives. You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics. A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk. Legislative activity is always based on care for the people. To this you have been invited, called and convened by those who elected you.” -- Pope Francis
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

no. republicans will shut it down, just to be dicks.

if they do, they have to forfeit their claim of having a monopoly on christianity. plenty of lefties like this pope and are willing to think about what he said, instead of dismissing it out of hand.

Some used to refer to the church I grew up in as the "frozen chosen". It's good to see some thawing out going on. To me "church" is big waves on a rocky shore, mountains or rock concerts but for those who are more faith focused this must be great. It's cool to see this may be starting to happen.
