How far removed does one have to be before they aren't considered native american? I have Cherokee Indian in my bloodline.josevolution said:I don't think any of us can really understand how most native Americans feel about this issue since none of us are native Americans at all ...you really have to walk in their shoes to get a true perspective

Yes Scotty boy you nailed this one.Last-12-Exit said:I'm friends with a bear and he hates that chicago has been allowed to call their team the bears for 80 years. What pisses them off even more is the cubs. It offends their babies. That bear also knows a couple of horses and they plan on filing lawsuits against the Colts for defamation. Especially after that blow out loss to the patriots in the playoffs last year.

Also, maybe read Paul Chaat Smiths book Everything You Know About Indians is Wrong. I If I recall correctly, Smith talks about that in one of the essays in that (excellent) book.

My mom's great great grandma was a cherokee Indian. From there, there weren't any more Indians in my family. So that would make me less than 1/8 Cherokee Indian. I probably have more Irish in me than Indian. Anyway, I can't speak for others, but I am not offended by redskins, Indians, braves, Blackhawks, or any team name.brianlux said:

It's the Irish in us that makes us rebellious- I know, I'm 1/8 Irish. Listen to the rebel within and resist those racist names, Cherokee Warrior!

That's funny, but I don't think they're racist. That's why I asked how far down the line your bloodline runs.brianlux said:Last-12-Exit said:

To be honest, I hadn't thought so either until I started reading about how many American Indians do object to the names and fine them racist.Last-12-Exit said:

As far as bloodline goes, it seems I read somewhere that it depends on the tribe- some require 1/2 some as low as 1/16th. I would think there are other factors.
Smith, (who I mentioned above and is 1/2 Indian) says this:
"It presents the unavoidable question: are Indian people allowed to change? Are we allowed to invent completely new ways of being Indian that have no connection to previous ways we have lived? Authenticity for Indians is a brutal measuring device that says we are only Indian as long as we are authentic. Part of the measurement is about percentage of Indian blood. The more, the better. Fluency in one’s Indian language is always a high card. Spiritual practices, living in one’s ancestral homeland, attending powwows, all are necessary to ace the authenticity test. Yet many of us believe taking the authenticity tests is like drinking the colonizer’s Kool-Aid—a practice designed to strengthen our commitment to our own internally warped minds. In this way, we become our own prison guards."

I think what he is saying is that, though it is important, there are more factors than just blood lines.

After more thought on this subject,I would like to add a few provocative names and non PC team names to the we must ban them as they are offensive list.
Giants-This is a slap in the face to all super tall and big people.
Padres-The cartoonish depiction of a religious figure Will def upset some of the tighty whitey religious right.Hell add the Devils to that list as you can't support a team named after The dark underworld leader.
Angels-That upsets the devil worshipers
Cowboys-What about the Cowgirls? Can we please change the name to Cow-people?
Pirates,Buccaneers-These sailors raped and pillaged and stole things. How can we support these teams when many met violence at sea due to there heavy hand.
Eagles-That's our national bird for gosh sakes.Letting Philly fan soil its image is a crime.
Patriots-Great a logo of a white Protestant who was fine with slavery.I don't think so.
Sharks- very insensitive to all the victims of shark attacks throughout time.
Dolphins- these guys are endangered in some waters, cmon
Ravens-This is a black bird, repping a city with real race issues.Could we be more insensitive.
Browns- well I know it's Paul's last name but you could think of some one who could get offended.
Yankees-offends southerners by reminding them of the civil war.
Packers- I find this makes fun of our gay brothers and sisters and needs to be changed.
Dodgers- great, we are glorifying the labor of many pedestrians caught and killed in traffic.trying to avoid motor vehicles.
Pelicans-this one is just the stupidest name in pro sports.
Hurricanes- now this one personally hits home as I've dealt with these deadly storms my whole life.Bastards.
You get the jist.

So I'm not huge on PC-ness in general as mentioned before, pretty much more on the kindness, consideration and common sense side of things.
But I have to say that I've seen people called "retard" on here - in a fit of anger or disgust or whatever propelled use of the term. Not discounting the emotion behind its use by any means, but...I don't know, it - its intent - makes me wince.
My city is hosting the Special Olympics this week and these sweet, loving, hearts-on-their-sleeve people have been all over the local news. It's humbling and uplifting.
Not demanding the word not be used (it's not my personal site, plus I wouldn't presume to ask that anyway), but it'd be nice to maybe think twice - or think of a different word? - before using that one.

Good point Hedo.
I know I also have a soft spot for the courage and spirit of those young people with physical and mental disabilities.Man o man are they always smiling and full of joy.Its uplifting, and makes me want to count my blessings that my children and our family have not had to endure the heavy life toll that being both a care giver and one with special needs brings.0 -
Very much agree here too, H. Anyone putting down someone with a condition they are born with needs some major head adjustment."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0
