I'm surprised they reported it as satire.

Too bad really because this kind of thing detracts from legitimate protests over names like "Redskins" or "Indians" etc. which are not politically correct issues but rather issues of real racism. But I suppose I spoil the joke, huh?

Brian,I agree the Redskins should re market(and capitalize) on a name change,But taking the name Indians by itself isn't bad, although arguments over there mascot has validity.

I really have no problem with Chiefs,Tribe,Warriors,Indians,Seminoles, etc. What is wrong with those names ? Nothing. No slurs at all.
Shit Notre Dame and The Fighting Irish is way worse and nobody is complaining.

That's the Faux News perspective. In reality no one is walking on egg shells . It's kind of hard to argue about the confederate flag issue when the teabagger governor of SC was adamantly in favor of removing the flag.

this stuff has been in the news more than in any other time in history that I can recall and personally I think it's just a bunch of non-sence from a all of this countries whinners..but that's just my opinion.

I just don't think those names are racists. Especially not the Indians. Other than they aren't Indians. Is redskins like the n word of the native American community?

Yeah "redskins" is really pretty insulting. It's really similar to naming a team the "Wetbacks"

It's a tough one...."Indians" doesn't really seem bad but when you put it in perspective it does seem to relate to the majority (white people) expressing some dominance over people that our ancestors have conquered/murdered, etc.

well ya gotta think that who ever named these teams didn't use those name because the native indians were or a weaklings, I would think because of thier toughness and willing to fight that they are admired just like the fighting irish or the sdsu aztec's, I can't think of any team that was named after a group of cowards.

Only problem is, rr, most Indians would vehemently disagree with you.

"In general, NCAI strongly opposes the use of derogatory Native sports mascots. However, in the case where mascots refer to a particular Native nation or nations, NCAI respects the right of individual tribal nations to work with universities and athletic programs to decide how to protect and celebrate their respective tribal heritage.

Indian mascots and stereotypes present a misleading image of Indian people and feed the historic myths that have been used to whitewash a history of oppression.Despite decades of work to eliminate the use of discrimination and derogatory images in American sports, the practice has not gone away. I always felt that political correctness was really a way to express respect for people that are different than I am. Nothing wrong with having empathy for other peoples' feelings about an issue even if I can't understand the depth of their feelings about the matter.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

that's a good honest way to look at things.
to me PC is always one sided, one group emposing thier views on another but that is also a never ending circle on anybodys side uaslly.

I understand that feeling. When I take the long view of history then it seems like it has been from the perspective (usually, not always) of white men. It kind of negates the contributions and feelings of other groups. I am definitely speaking from the perspective of a woman when I say that women have made history and contributed greatly but are often marginalized when we study/remember history. So if we have a women's history month then at least there is a beginning of some acknowledgment of these contributions. I often hear the comment from my students "why isn't there a white history month?" Why? Because every single day that I teach US history, it is primarily from the perspective of whites. It can be disheartening to spend every day hearing things from another person's perspective without any acknowledgment of the contributions of other groups. I think when that evens out then we will see less of what you are describing.
