I think this is one of those tunes that has really been elevated simply for its lack of play. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice song. I just think its the last opener left on a lot of people not heard list, and gets requested much more than its fair share. Not the worst song this has happened with, but if it got more play I don't think there'd be a big push to play it more.

You could be right, but for me, this has been the stand out track off Ten from day 1.

I had to grow to love this song a little bit, it's very captivating but not your typical rock song. There is so much feeling in it, I can see how some folks might be turned off and not really get it.

The MTV Unplugged performance was amazing and really turned me on to it!

I heard Oceans live 2 times, the first was as an opener in '06 at The Santa Barbara Bowl. It was so beautiful!! It's an outdoor facility... the sun was just beginning to set and the band came out on stage, sat in chairs and did a Gorge style unplugged opening set. I was completely blown away and every time I listen to that boot I replay Oceans about 3 or 4 times.
Every time I hear Oceans I hit replay, it's such a gem!

i can listen again and again......

It's a really great song... it just doesn't sound as good live IMO. It's just one of those songs that Eddie stuggles a bit with vocally. I'd choose the studio version every time.

Hey, if we are being honest, there's more than a couple of songs Ed struggles with these days. Although, for his age, he still surprises me with the stuff he can do. I'm sure he didn't write a lot of this stuff with the thought of being able to sing it into his 50's. He has really adapted to his ability well. Some songs he just can't nail anymore.

Edit - back to the topic, I'd still love to catch this one once as it is a hell of a song.

Yez, there are several songs that he struggles with now that he didn't in the past. But i don't feel like his struggle with Oceans has to do with his age. I don't think he ever sang it very well on stage. I think it has something to do with the key.
But anyway, I totally understand anyone who wants to hear it at a show, particularly if they haven't before. I was thrilled when they played it when I was there mainly because I knew it was my first and probably last chance to see it.... and now I'm good, lol. Don't need to see it again (not that I'd be upset if I did). Once was enough!

Release into Oceans last year for my birthday show in Detroit. MIND BLOWN.

Now THAT is a birthday gift!

It was wonderful, and that was only the beginning!

Oceans is up there with Release for me in terms of songs I will never ever ever get sick of listening to. Never ever.

even listening to the 92 boots you can tell Ed struggles with this one. Look no further than the unplugged version.

Haha, maybe we've uncovered the real reason they never released the oceans video back then. He didn't want to sing it more to promote it.

I love the way Ed sings oceans then and now. The effortless purity of youth (assisted by production) in the studio version and all of the variations that he's had over the years singing it live are all beautiful to me. It irks me a little when people comment that Ed struggles with it. That's just the nature of singing and aging. The art is in the way he modifies the song in the live setting to keep it real and express the sentiment of the song. It makes it feel fresh and organic. I'm really hoping to hear it someday. Thx paulonious for reminding me how much I love this song.

I have a theory as to why, but I'm leaving it there.

Well, i am guessing your theory has to do with who he said at unplugged he wrote the song about? Who cares. I have songs written about past loves, painful ones at that, that i still play. for me at least, those somgs have become more about who i was at the time, rather than who she was.

If that was the reason it isnt played often, i would think it would be outright retired. But hey, i think my love for the song stems from bass being my main instrument. Such a goegeous bassline.

    Wrong.

Was the first song I ever heard at my 1st show, Wembley back in 1996. It has a majestic beauty, but I'd agree that Ed has always struggled with this one. Unplugged sound check for example...
