could someone, anyone please, please, please explain bitcoin to me? a while back, I was watching the st. petersburg bitcoin bowl (n.c state vs. UCF) and I realized I didn't have a clue what a bitcoin was. after googling it (them?), I am more confused than ever. maybe halifax knows...
I can't begin to explain how it works other than you "buy" it with a credit card or cash, once approved you get an encrypted something or other and you can use it to pay for things where its accepted by activating your account on your "smart" phone and swiping it or using that little doohickey that looks like a rhorsach. However, its used by bad people who hack your computer and encrypt all of your files and demand payment in the form of BitCoin to unencrypt them. Anyone who uses it, in my opinion, is supporting bad actors and it allows the transfer of funds without a trace, think terrorists, drug kingpins, etc. Also, its a currency on an exchange like other currencies and as such fluctuates. I have no idea if its backed like US dollars are backed by the Fed or like your savings is FDIC insured up to $250K. I don't feel bad for those folks who bought BitCoin at $1200 a coin and its now at $600. Currency of the future but I aint touching it. I still write checks and snail mail them. I don't do any banking or finance online. Computers still aren't safe as all the hacks bear out.

Re bitcoin. It is a real currency, just like the US dollar and the British Pound and the Yen is. It's just that it's the only digital currency. Think of cyberspace as a country, and this is its money. It has an insane exchange rate though. 1 bitcoin = $298 USD right now (not $600 as previously mentioned). @-) And yeah, when it was up at $1200 I fucking wished I grabbed just a few of them back at the very beginning!
I think most people are worried by the fact that its digital currency... sounds like it would be easier for hackers to steal. I understand its pretty well encrypted but isn't everything? Well of super importance anyway? I have a friend who is in computer security. He started out in the Air Force listening to the Ruskies while stationed in Japan. He's got stories and what he knows is scary. To me anyway.
