Binaural and No Code vinyl bootlegs

Oh, and I forgot to mention that they also suck because people get duped by bootlegs. Not everyone is an expert and get fooled by these things. They think they're buying the real.deal and spend lots of money only to find out later that they are stuck with a crappy reproduction. Not cool. It's not like these things have big "Illegal bootleg" stickers on them. Many are made with the intention of trying to fool people. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

Given the price of some of these on eBay, this is definitely a fact. I saw some of these over the $100 mark, which is just bullshit.PJ_Soul said:Many are made with the intention of trying to fool people.
I got screwed because of an illegal bootleg once myself.... or more accurately, the person who sold it to me on ebay was the one who really got screwed. It was The Killers' "Hot Fuss". The seller was under the impression that it was real (didn't know any better, even though once I got it, it was obvious to me). She gave me the correct number on the spine and everything. Total fake, and poor quality. Once I received it and I realized it was a bootleg but had paid an amount more suitable to the real thing, the seller had to refund me (we worked out a deal of a $75 refund so that I wouldn't have to pay the huge return shipping). It was a real pain in the ass for both me and the seller and we both lost money on it.With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. I have got all the current bootlegs (Avocado, Yield, Binaural, No Code) and the original pressings, too. If you are into collecting vinyl and can get the boots for a decent price, buy them, at least they look nice. In terms of sound: Avocado and Yield sound surprisingly good. Binaural and No Code only look nice, the sound is amazingly shitty. They are distorted and there is lots of crackling and noise going on. Plus apparently they made a mistake when ripping the source material from CD: there is an additional little break between the songs which becomes pretty obvious when the songs should actually morph into each other like Hail,Hail and Who You Are… Don´t pay more than 40 bucks for these otherwise you will be really really disappointed.Spotifiy is to music, what KFC is to chicken...0

Thanks for the words of advice. I've been waiting for someone to post something on sound quality.adogcalledego said:Don´t pay more than 40 bucks for these otherwise you will be really really disappointed.

If they fear so much having too much inventory, why not just press a smaller amount? Or yes, like others have suggested numerous times now, make it to order. I think it is no surprise that the first two box sets still have leftovers. They are nice and everything, but these are the albums that have been readily available on vinyl anyways. Why does it always have to be either a ginormous amount of pressings or none at all? Smaller bands are doing stuff like this all the time, why can't PJ?
I also hope they won't reissue the remaining albums in one box. Because then there is again a big amount of money to be shelled out, which is what is preventing most people now from obtaining the original pressings.
Also, the warehouse is empty now, after all the mystery boxes. Maybe they needed to make room to store all the reissues? :-j
And last but not least - PLEASE REISSUE THE BENAROYA HALL SHOW ON VINYL! Thank you, Pearl Jam

Just received the No Code & Binaural vinyls. The cardboard casing is pretty thin & flimsy. As for the colored vinyl, it's pretty!!
Wonder what will be next for these folks. Just imagine if they do release the 4 LP Benaroya Hall Box Set?0 -
Would be interesting to know whether you also think they sound shitty. For Binaural I couldn´t finish side 1, it hurt my ears. Don´t think they´ll do Benaroya, probably Riot Act. For me it looks like they are into making money by cheaply copying sought-after records and selling them way over value. They probably cost 10€ in the making and the cheapest ones I saw for sale were about 30€. That´s not a bad margin. Making a 4 LP Box is pretty expensive, they´d need quite some sales…I´d be gladly proven wrong although I would prefer the real deal, especially when I listen to the poor sound of the NC and Binaural Boots.
Thus I´ll keep hoping for an official Benaroya reissue…Spotifiy is to music, what KFC is to chicken...0 -
I own every original pressing but Binaural and have to say that since PJ's vinyl pressings for the most part sound like shit (except vault 3 and LB) it is obvious that a digital format was pressed into the vinyl, not an analog. Some bands spent more time and pressed the real deal- but PJ did not. Many board members know what I'm talking about. Sure, I'll eventually buy an original Binaural, but until then knowing that all their original presses are of pretty similar/shitty quality anyway, I don't mind spending a fraction of the cost for the music which will be very close to the shitty original version anyway. The colored vinyl to me doesn't mean shit- the fact that I have the album on a turntable does.
But then again I listen to almost everything on vinyl now.I'm like an opening band for your mom.0 -
Thanks to those who posted updates about the sound quality. I was thinking I getting the binaural one but if it's unlistenable there's just no point.I'm like an opening band for your mom.0

I also got the binaural copy and I don't think it sounds shitty at all. It also depends upon your set-up, I just replaced my needle before I got the record and it sounds fine in my opinion.0

It´s definitely not my setup. I´m using a 2 months old Ortofon Blue 2M System which has been adjusted properly. I compared my original copy to the bootleg and the repress is really really bad. The original actually sounds way better, less distortion, wider stereofield and a nice warm low end. The orange boot is distorted and crackly. Maybe the quality of the copies varies, mine is barely playable. I might be a bit picky, but in this case my bootleg record is obviously broken. ;-)Post edited by adogcalledego onSpotifiy is to music, what KFC is to chicken...0

I am running a vintage Shure on my table now and was thinking about putting the Ortofon on my extra headshell.livefootsteps.org/user/?usr=446

I was running a Shure M44-7 before which is a good value for money system but the Ortofon is definitely a different level. I tried various systems, the Ortofon Red among others, and I liked the blue one the most. It is way clearer and punchier than the Shure. The resolution is awesome, it totally opened up the sound of the records and it´s a good allrounder, too. I am into all sorts of music, loads of Rock and heavy stuff but also Jazz and Classical and the 2M does a great job with all types of music so far. It is not the highest end system but in my opinion there is not much in the same pricerange that delivers the same quality. Try it! (I know, I sound like an Ortofon sales rep)

Thanks for the review. I was rocking a Shure ML140he until my daughter accidently broke it. I almost cried since it is IMPOSSIBLE to find any NOS of this stylus. Right now I have a Shure M97he vintage early 80s on it. Probably falls somewhere between the Ortofon Red and Blue. I am gonna start saving up for the Blue. (you should apply with Ortofon for a sales job!!!

I love how someone who bought the record when it came out almost 20 years ago is being referred to as a flipper for selling it at market value
a flipper is someone who goes out on record store day and buys a 7" for £7 and then puts it on eBay the same day for 30 times what they paid for it, or whatever. A market value is just that. If you want the thing you pay for it, if you think it's a ridiculous price, you don't. All record collectors have paid through the nose on multiple occasions for things they "need" to complete their collection. These bootlegs surely can't be anywhere near the quality of the originals? It provides another option for someone to "complete" their collection on the cheap I suppose. But I think it's funny how holier than thou people are on this subject. I've used this analogy before, but in 1976 my parents paid £8000 for their house. By this reckoning, if they sold it tomorrow they'd be considered a thief for asking anything more than £8000 for it. ~~ 27 years of nothin' but failures and promises that i couldn't keep ~~0 -
my guess is that they are just vinyl rips from a CD or another vinyl. People have been buying and selling boots forever.
Why is buying this vinyl different than the old days of buying a bootleg concert CD?? I know the vinyl is an official release in original format, but the concerts are PJ's intellectual property as well.
Both illegal, both serving a demand.
You wanna pay 150 bucks for a fake repro eat your heart out,0 -
