I think it would be incredible if Pearl Jam only played 5 songs from their first 4 albums every night. And concentrated on making the new shit staples.0
-
That's an uphill battle since the band didn't promote their music from 1996-2006 and I get the feeling they were pretty uncomfortable plugging their stuff during the avacado era.
I remember an interview with Ed saying he couldn't find a record shop in europe that had binuaral and riot act and realized the band had withdrawn too much from the spotlight. You can only grow something you water, guys. :-)Post edited by evenflow82 onI've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Exactly why they should scale back the songs from Ten, VS, Vitalogy, and No Code.evenflow82 said:You can only grow something you water, guys. :-)
Grow the newer songs into something live. Telling me they can't find room to jam on songs from Riot Act, Avocado, Backspacer or Lightning Bolt?

I think they can, but it isn't going to set an arena on fire like the earlier stuff.

I totally agree. Again: set-list was entirely composed of songs I've not heard live. Of course that leaves out the crowd-pleasers like Alive, Betterman, YLB etc. That's I named it the "Selfish Set-List", rather than the set "XCel On Fire Set-List". There's a few rockers sprinkled in there, just not the familiar ones.evenflow82 said:I think they can, but it isn't going to set an arena on fire like the earlier stuff.
There are a lot of tracks from Binaural, Riot Act, S/T that are relevant to a particular time in our recent history. Unfortunately, it seems we didn't learn from our mistakes, and we've found ourselves right back in the same exact situation ~10 years later. I think a lot of these songs might find some traction if they were 'revived' and played alongside Getaway, My Father's Son & Infallible.
To Dirty Frank Z's point, I'd really like to hear Big Wave or Amongst the Waves turned into extended Porch-like jams.

the big wave outro just screams for an extended jam. marker in the sand has that potential, too.0

The fade out ending has been a reason why I have trouble getting into the last few albums.
The fades outs on Life Wasted and Lightning Bolt are just studio laziness, imo. "Can't think of an ending. Meh, just fade it out, Brendan."I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

I remember going to watch my friends' band practice. They spent more time trying to figure out the intro/outro than writing the actual verse/chorus of their songs. Starting/stopping song must be the most difficult part. Once everyone locks into the groove, you're golden. The studio fade out seems lazy, and must make it tricky to end a song live.evenflow82 said:The fade out ending has been a reason why I have trouble getting into the last few albums.

I, for one, would leave completely overwhelmed by CM's setlist! It's one of those where I'd find myself saying "woooow!" at the beginning of each song! A little more Yield would make it absolutely killer, IMO.Star Lake 00 / Pittsburgh 03 / State College 03 / Bristow 03 / Cleveland 06 / Camden II 06 / DC 08 / Pittsburgh 13 / Baltimore 13 / Charlottesville 13 / Cincinnati 14 / St. Paul 14 / Hampton 16 / Wrigley I 16 / Wrigley II 16 / Baltimore 20 / Camden 22 / Baltimore 24 / Raleigh I 25 / Raleigh II 25 / Pittsburgh I 250

The thing I don't get with the fade outs is if they can end them awesomely in a live setting, why can't they do that in the studio? I've never been a fan of fade endings, so maybe it's just me. hahaha. I love virtually all your songs, PJ, just a gripe on my behalf. :-)I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Thx! It was a lot fun. Moving songs around and whatnot. You should try it. I'd love to see what you some up with!HesCalledDyer said:I, for one, would leave completely overwhelmed by CM's setlist! My two cents: you really do need some of those "cornerstone" songs and no, it's not for the casual fans. What too many PJ fans are afraid to admit is that without the big, anthemic, zeppelin-esque stuff (I'm thinking Ten and vs. in particular), the rest of their set would sound really flat. Tremor Christ might be a fun song in theory, but in concert, it's extremely flat, and that's when the band IS playing their hits in the same set list. Relying on TC, Speed of Sound, Oceans etc to carry the energy of the show? Yikes.
No disrespect at all (this is purely a merry hypothetical, right?), but the first five and first encore of CM's set would be, in my opinion, really boring live.
I completely understand wanting less hits, and more b-sides etc. I'm all for that. But I think it's utter lunacy to pretend that a show without PJ's quintessential sound (e.g. Ten, vs. Vitalogy) would be very interesting.
...which of course reinforces what a good frontman EV is. I think he does a great job of putting together a setlist.1998-06-30 Minneapolis

Yea, you have to give the people what they want to a sizable degree. They are playing arenas BECAUSE of the songs off the first three albums. To deny these songs from fans would be sort of disrespectful from a casual fan pov.
Ed knows this and probably begins with five to seven "given" or "automatic" songs then adds a few moderately known tunes, rarities and then covers. It's like a recipe sort of.
Thanks again for playing MN, PJ. :-)I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.
