D'oh! I just realized you were talking about the times and cultures portrayed in those films vs the films being made themselves.

My question still stands, though :)

Thinking about films like Gladiator, Caligula and Spartacus and can say, thankfully, we have become a bit less violent. And, gosh, it only took how many hundreds of years? :-(

I agree and disagree, there are people dying and suffering in different methods now.
Shocking Asia have you seen it ? It gets worse what goes on. And in muslim countries women are beaten and gang raped. Some are kidnapped and held hostage and raped repeatedly, sometimes its in the family. People stab one another now. There are serial murders who taunt their victims who dont get caught.
Theres bullying, and also animal cruelty.
And then theres bull fighting, it still exists.
So it is more discreet now and aside from that there is the poor starving and there are sex slaves and I could go on.
I dont see much difference really.

But what about non-historical yet beloved violent films? Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Natural Born Killers (actually, one of my favorites). Long list of them.

True, but what at least no one gets buried up to their neck with a big chopping thing running amok. Those Romans were a massively brutal bunch. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that the progress we have made away from violence is really rather small considering the hundreds of years we've had to become a bit more civilized. But I still am (perhaps naively enough) convinced we can change that.

  • I can't wait to hear or read what prescribed drugs these kids were on. But alas, they'll probably keep that quiet as three quarters of the population have been duped into thinking they need drugs like that.

And on a lighter note. Pearl Jam can one up their trilogy and now add Slender Man to the mix.

Now that was unexpected but made me laugh - thanks!

I wonder about the potential prescription side as well...and it's a sign of the times, I guess, that I wouldn't be surprised if it played some part, despite their young age (and certainly combined with other factors).

shit like this didn't happen 40yrs ago our society has gone down the drain at least here in AMERICA MOTHER FUCKING EVIL KIDS ..

That is simply not true Jose. Crazy shit like this did happen 40 years ago - it was a crazy kind of story back then when such things happened, and it's a crazy story now when it happens. I still can't figure out why you think fucked up isolated incidents like this didn't happen prior to 1970. Just go online and Google it. You can find weird stories like this going all the way back through history. Not that that makes this particular story any less ghoulish and shocking. I'm just saying that it's an indication that these two girls are fucked up, obviously gravitated towards each other because they are messed up, and their parents seem to have dropped the ball as well. But it's not a change. History is loaded with kids and adults alike doing absolutely crazy shit. And every time through history people are horrified and think about how things are getting worse and worse.... some things never change!
The only thing that I can think of that really has changed is that boys and girls are on more equal footing now. That is a good thing! Just not when they go psycho, just like it's bad when boys go psycho. Frankly, the fact that these little monsters are girls is something that somehow makes the act more shocking surprises me. Aren't we past making such distinctions between little boys and girls? Males and females are equally capable of being nuts. Not sure why people are more surprised when a girl goes batshit.

for as evolved as we think we are in general, we are but just a step up from our animal selves.

most violence comes from a base "lower" self
