Framing records ok or bad idea?

I've seen arguments for both sides of this. I want to frame some of my record collection and put it on the wall since I have duplicates of some of them. Most of what I want to frame still sealed. Is this a bad idea?

Why would it be a bad idea? They are your records; do what you want with them.

You could take out the records. I have some on my wall and that worked.

    Sick framejob... :)
  • That frame looks great. I've heard they can warp in the frame. Anyone have trouble with that?
  • I would like to keep them sealed

Ahhhh, yeah. I guess if you have them close to a window or something, warping could be an issue. I'm not sure about that, though.

I would frame the art and play the records, but that's just my thought.

  • I agree that's why I'm only framing duplicates.

i bought replacement sleeves so that i can store the record and hang the artwork separately. best of both worlds

They're all duplicates he said, so playing them or not playing them is a moot point.
I can't say I think that sealed albums in a frame would look any good though. Why not just keep them where you can pick them up and look at both sides, etc? I just don't see the point in a framed sealed album. That awesome frame job posted earlier with the Pitt poster is fantastic - that's the kind of thing that makes a framed record look good. If I were you, I'd sell or trade the sealed albums for awesome poster art to frame. That would look way cooler IMO. But hey, it's your stuff! Do whatever you want with it of course! :)

That's bad ass and actually inspired me to do something similar. I was at Phoenix and the red poster I have has to look good with something! Imo it's ugly as shit by itself...
As for the op, go for it! Although I agree a sealed vinyl might not look as sharp in a frame.

Just don't frame the actual vinyl with the sleeve, if you do you will get an outline of the record on the outter sleeve...ring wear.

How you managed to unfold it like that? It's not possible, so you must have cut the packaging someway, right?
  • AZAAZA Posts: 89
I'm not sure what we ended up doing, I gave it to the framer and let him sort it out, I know we had to adjust the inner sleeve to get the yield sign to sit in the cut out properly.
I kept the vinyl so I had something to look at, I always liked the little pics that Jeff shot.

The only things to be careful when framing is that if the art is valuable, make sure the glass doesn't directly touch the artwork as condensation over time can transfer from the glass to the artwork (this depends on environment as well of course). Unless it's a cheap offset (non-screen printed) poster, I always use a mat, preferably an acid-free cotton rag. Also, obviously don't hang the art work in direct sunlight to prevent fading.
