Marc Maron takes dig at Pearl Jam

Just listened to Marc Maron's sitdown with Maynard James Keenan on his podcast, "WTF". Great interview done last year... you can find it on YouTube. I'm a TOOL fan, so it was interesting to hear these guys talk for over an hour. When they started talking about the early 90's when TOOL was beginning, the talk inevitably went to "grunge". Maron said something along the lines of when he heard the first Pearl Jam album, he thought "Great, Bad Company is back together". Both men enjoyed a laugh over this.
I don't know why it offends me. They have a right. It just seems like it echoes Kurt Cobain's sentiments from back in the day. Yes, PJ has probably always had some classic rock elements, but I think these opinions are just way off. Maybe he only ever heard "Alive" and "Even Flow"? Tell me how "Once", "Why Go", "Porch" or "Deep" are anything like "stadium cock rock", or whatever Cobain dubbed them back in the day?

who is Marc Maron? Is he someone I should recognize?
We are all guilty of judging others without knowing them. Maybe they don't know that we have a band here that has given almost 25 years of amazing lyrics, music, activism and inspiration to millions of others. Maybe they don't understand how PJ affects so many lives and brings us so much. Their loss.

I love Maron's show - Maron. Very funny. I've never checked out WTF though.

I wouldn't take much offense to the comment. PJ is not for everybody.

He's a comedian, and now has a very popular podcast called "WTF". I can understand a comedian trying to be funny by taking jabs like this. It was a little disappointing to hear Maynard laugh along with this, as I'm a big fan of his and of TOOL. It's as if the stigma is out there, in some circles, that PJ is contrived, not as real as some other Seattle bands. Maybe the group high five on the album cover was cheesey, and maybe if you only ever heard the first two singles, you could make this rush to judgment. I don't know why it irked me... I know I shouldn't care what others say about. Just a little disappointing.

Before the PJ comments, Maynard was talking about how one of his motivations to get into music was to do it right, from the heart, after seeing all the fake 80's garbage. That's what disappointed me. I feel like PJ was being lumped in with stuff that wasn't sincere or lacked depth.

Overall, it was a great interview IMO. Maynard is an intelligent, funny guy and this was as revealing as I've ever heard him. It just kind of sucked for a couple guys that you like (Maynard and Maron) to sort of dismiss your favorite band.

I would not read too much into it. Wasn't Ed drinking Maynards wine and watching Pucifier play when they are all at Lolllpalooza last year? They may actually be friends.
...got a mind full of questions and a teacher in my soul...
  • Who? Is this an attempt to try to pump up his pod cast?

I don't really care if he insulted a band I like. But, you might have well said - my cousin was talking to someone from a crappy band and they said such and such about PJ - b/c this had the same effect.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Right on, man. Got big smiles from watching that clip.

I find the comment funny, actually...but offensive? Not even close.

Tool is pretty incredible, but like the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley, they are an artist whom I respect and enjoy, but rarely listen to. I listen to Pearl Jam more than any other artist, although Radiohead is in a strong second place.

I love Tool and APC. Maynard is a great singer/frontman/lyricist and if he isn't a PJ fan that's not going to change my opinion of him just the same as my opinion of my friends who on the whole dislike them. Ed's singing style is an acquired taste and to many they just made two or three good albums and are now a nostalgia act. Never heard of Marc Maron but I'm sure he's a decent enough guy. He just happens to not be a PJ fan. I've never understood either why it bothered anyone about comments made by Kurt Cobain? I loved a lot of the man's music but he was hardly some role model/idol to look up to and he played the media in his own punkier than thou way so half of what he said was probably tongue in cheek anyway. I'd be surprised if he even remembered the other half.

For people who have not seen the Maron show, I would compare it to a mix between Louie and Curb.

Maron's been around for quite awhile but I haven't seen/heard his stand-up in ages, let alone his podcast.

But that description up there is enough for me to search it out!

To be fair, the first hits for PJ are currently being played on classic rock stations along w/ Bad Company.

TOOL is the biggest example of bandwagon jumping I've ever seen. People like them because it makes them look deep, intelligent and hardcore. I've never understood one lyric on a tool album. They are horribly mixed and drone on one chord.

Regardless of how the interview portrayed this band or that band, that is the opinion I have on tool.

Also, I don't know who marc maron is. The amount of D-list comedians who have podcasts is a joke in and of itself.

Last week on the WTF podcast Maron did interviews with Jason Isbell and Patterson Hood - highly recommend both. Have not listened to WTF very much but I thought both of these were really well done. Love the new DBT record English Oceans.
