Man commits suicide at mall after girlfriend insists on buying more shoes

Tao Hsiao reportedly leaped from a seventh floor balcony at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, China, after a fight with his girlfriend. 'He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes than she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,' a witness said.

The body of Tao Hsiao is wheeled away after he jumped over an upper-level railing to his death at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, China.

Tao Hsiao jumped over an upper-level railing to his death at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, China.

An aggravated man leapt from an upper-level mall balcony to his death because his girlfriend refused to stop shopping, witnesses said.

Tao Hsiao, 38, was at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, China, for five hours on Dec. 7 when his lady insisted that they check out another shoe store, reported Chinese news site Hexun.com.

"He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes than she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more," an eyewitness said, according to Gawker. "She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument."

Tao apparently could not handle any more name-calling — or shopping for that matter.

Security footage shows Tao — in an apparent burst of anger — throw the shopping bags to the ground before jumping over the seventh floor railing.

Tao reportedly crashed into holiday decorations on the ground floor and died upon impact.

Other shoppers gaped as paramedics rushed the man away on a gurney.

A mall spokesperson said that no one else was injured as a result of the suicide and that his body was removed from the premises quickly, according to the Inquisitor news site.

"This is a tragic incident, but this time of year can be very stressful for many people," the spokesperson added.

I'm glad my wife is content with her 8-10 pairs of shoes.

I wonder what shoes she will be wearing to the funeral...

  • What the hell was he doing shoe shopping with her in the first place?

Probably reasonable to assume this man had bigger problems than just his girlfriend's shopping habits.

Makes you wonder why he didn't just tell her to fuck off, and leave. In China, you're looked down on if you get divorced, but this story says she was just his girlfriend. So I suppose he just cracked after 5 hours of mental torture with the materialistic, money-obsessed b****.

Also, Christmas is not a Chinese tradition, so it's weird that she accused him of 'spoiling Christmas'. Most Chinese don't give two shits about Christmas.

Oh come on, do people really believe this man killed himself because of a 5 hour shopping trip? To the point that they are going to blame this woman's shopping habits for his suicide?

    That's patently ridiculous.

Do u think he jumps if his girlfriend turned to him and said "I'm ready to go home now" instead of going in that last store?

Do you think you know the first thing about his life, or his mental health based on the content of that "news" story?
  • Strange story, and I'm reading it now, right after I was reading this link and was pretty immersed in this photo of a Chinese man leaping to his death off a bridge moments after his lover jumped. (Perhaps it was over shoes  )

Perhaps they should have guards on their bridges and mall edges to prevent jumping? :?

Are these folks way too easily pushed over the edge, literally and figuratively?

Don't they have divorce court in China?
    ...
And on a side note... seriously, what the fuck is the deal with women and shoes? Are shoes really 'cute'? And if they are, how the hell would a guy know in a shoe is cute or not? They're SHOES!
    ...
P.S. To you women who insist on dragging your guy to go shoe shopping with you... here's a little 'Guy' secret.
Us guys will tolerate shoe shopping with you, just in case we get to look down a cute girl's top when she's bending over or up her skirt when she's trying on a pair.
Get smart, ladies. Leave your guy at home when you go shoe shopping.

My wife learned early in our relationship that if she wants me to wander around the mall with her for more than about 15 minutes without bitching, she needs to take me to the bar first. I can't deal with the mall w/o a couple pops first.

No, obviously not. Precisely why I'm not going to suck up this story based on nothing more than witness descriptions of the final actions of this man, and treat it as hard fact as you have done.

I'm not the one pretending I have the slightest understanding of the issues that led this poor guy to kill himself, I don't and neither do you. Boiling down a man's suicide to an argument over shoes, just because some people said they were arguing about shoes before he killed himself is plainly idiotic though. Excuse me for hoping for even the most half-hearted attempt at critical thinking here.

    No it isn't.

It's not unheard of for people to suddenly lose control of their senses in the heat of the moment. The incident with the shoes may have been the straw that broke the camels back. This man may have exhibited no signs of being unstable, or suicidal, up to that moment.
Sometimes stressful situations can cause people to lose their minds, and act completely out of character.
If this man was prone to acting irrationally, had little patience, and was generally the type to revert to extremes, then how do you explain the fact that he'd already spent five hours shopping with his girlfriend without blowing his lid?

I wouldn't even try, I would not assume the story is true and start blaming his "bitch" wife though.

You wouldn't assume the story is true? Despite the fact that there were many witnesses to testify as to it's truth, along with CCTV video footage of the whole 5 hours leading up to the incident?

Seems to me like you're trying to claim that she was innocent in the whole affair. Why is that? You don't think that some people are so shallow, materialistic, and generally annoying, that they can cause people close to them to crack?

Or were you just offended by my use of the word 'b****''?

I'm not claiming she's innocent or anything of the sort, I think you know this and are now just being purposefully disingenous.

As I have now said multiple times, we have no idea why the guy really killed himself, nor do we know anything about this couple's lives. Anybody who just accepts this story at face value has a shockingly low standard of evidence, it's nothing more than throwaway tabloid junk with no inside knowledge of the people involved. A few witness reports is not enough to assume we understand what was going on inside his head.

But whatever, you're obviously happy to unquestioningly accept it, so fill your boots.
