"They're very personal songs to Ed and to me," Cooper says. "I forged a close relationship with him through the movie and it's probably better kept between us. Sad to say, for Eddie Vedder fans, as we all are."

what about the re-recording Ed did with 'RELEASE'?

I would love to hear this version. Will that be available to hear anywhere?

Seems weird that he changed the lyrics to Release.

But then he did Cooper one better. He suggested re-recording the song for the first time in over two decades to afford a rendition rich with all the life experience he, now a father, had acquired in that time. He even tweaked the song's lyrics from "Dear Dad, can you see me now?" to "Dear Rod, can you see me now?," further embedding the musical identity of the film in the perspective of Russell Baze.

You can tell is a different version on the trailer for the movie...but it sounds close...damn close to the original. A few months ago when I first watched the trailer, I could tell something just sounded different...but it didn't sound like 2012/2013 Ed. In fact, it really didn't hit me that it was different until he went way higher on the outro chorus like he has done in recent years. It's definitely killer.

I havent liked the rerecorded versions of their other tunes (like for Lost Dogs) but this Release sounds intense. Love how Ed goes higher.

Release sounded really raw, like they stripped all the effects of the original release, and that helped considerably. But indeed right when his pitch raises on that note, its clear its on his newer influence of singing it, which works so well.

I was surprised when I heard it in the trailer. I thought "Oh man, he sold another song to another movie like on "Better Days" for "Eat, Pray, Love", which from my understanding that film was not worthy of his contribution.

I'm glad to hear this was an artistic decision that I hope is worthy of EV's crown jewel song.

Seriously, so ridiculous! People love petitions around here, this deserves a petition.

Um, this art is too good, so we're not gonna release it. Unreal!

Come on Ed, solo album, please.

I think I read somewhere that the director said it will be in the beginning of the movie. Where Christian Bale is driving and listening to the song on the radio?

Doesn't sound like it will be anymore. This is horrible! Not just the new Release, but we just lost out on a new Eddie solo album. I thought Into The Wild had some of his best material, and this may have been up there as well. Too bad :(

  • Wonder if we're getting the whole story. Could it be that Eddie saw the film and changed his mind? Some real controversy brewing here. The film used real family names to depict Native Americans in the Highlands of New Jersey as basically scum. I'm for artistic freedom, but I'm saddened to think about the DeGroat and Van Dunk kids, who go to local public schools, and the awful stereotypes they will hear about their people that are being reinforced in this movie. That said, I have not seen the movie, but have read summaries.
You can read about the controversy here.

That version of Release needs to see the light of day. Easily my favorite Pearl Jam song, and the little bit we hear on the trailer sounds freaking amazing.
