This is laughable.

No AIC?

No Soundgarden?

No STP?

No NIN?

No ......... PEARL JAM???

The writer is such a fucking snob it makes me sick... he apparently thinks that any band that appealed to a mass audience isn't worth a damn.

Yeah, probably because Cobain killed himself so they didn't have years of "irrelevancy" like Pearl Jam and the others... sad but true.

    Radiohead?

Green Day? (even though they aren't my favorite by any means)

    Oasis?

    Blind Melon?

Call me a "conformist" but I haven't even heard of about half of the bands on this stupid list.

Oh it's that Yahoo blogger guy again. Didn't wrote another article that pissed off a few Jammers here as well, I can't recall what it was about but it was a list of sorts as well, and 75% of the artists I've never heard of their music.

He's tryin' to be an artsy music critic.

Why is it laughable? It's his fucking opinion.

How would you feel if somebody laughed at your opinion???

That list isn't half bad.. Sure it doesn't have Pearl Jam, but it's not my list.

Its laughable because it doesn't include commonly agreed upon "shoe ins" like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AIC, Radiohead, NIN, etc etc. Without these bands, absolutely, the list is laughable.

Yes, I know it's his "fucking opinion."

yea. But it's another diss for our band. Leaves them out cuz they sold 10 million copies. Yet puts Nirvana in even though they sold the same.

If Pearl Jam "sucked ass", they would still be MY favorite bad.. What difference does it make what other people think. They aren't me or us.

Top anything lists always make me gag because they alienate everyone except the person whom conjured the list.

It really makes no difference in our lives so it's nothing to fret over..

    WHOA..... everyone just calm down.
  • That list wasn't half as a bad as you guys make it out to sound. Lanegan, Flaming Lips, Afghan Whigs, Waits, Elliot Smith, Mudhoney, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Dino Jr. are ALL SOLID choices that I wasn't really expecting to see get mentioned. Yet Cracker confuses me, sure "they" have a few good songs but nothing mind blowing. Another good thing was I thought it would be featuring bands that sing "post-grunge" type shit like Blur or the guys who sing "Counting Blue Cars". Sorry but bands like Live, Seven Mary Three, Bush and such sound an awful lot like each other and that bores me. And surprisingly enough I didn't see alot of it on this list. Plus there are a couple names I'm not familiar with that I wanna check out (Sebadoh, Giant Sand).

    wow, this list sucks ...
and its title is "best BANDS" and he puts PJ Harvey, Beck, etc. in it... as far as I know, PJ Harvey is not a band...
    2006: Antwerp, Paris
    2007: Copenhagen, Werchter
    2009: Rotterdam, London
    2010: MSG, Arras, Werchter
    2012: Amsterdam, Prague, Berlin
    2014: Amsterdam, Stockholm
  • Or better yet I didn't see Creed on here either.

None bands you have listed are alternative rock. I'm not commenting on the guy's list though.

That's a good list to me. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AIC are obvious choices. Actually, this list has encouraged me to check some of these artists out, because I haven't heard a few of them.

Is it really that important that everyone has to like Pearl Jam or realise their (supposed) significance? They're an important band but outside this message board, they're not some sort of musical god.

Yeah...The Red House Painters...There's a band that changed my life.
    Are you Fucking Kidding Me?

This guy must write for Pitchfork. Add Radiohead to the list and you've pretty much got Pitchforks boner list.

I despise these Too Cool For School Indie Hack Writers. They rip anything that sells over 500,000 records and praise every gone in 60 seconds Indie Band.

Don't pay any mind to this idiot.
  • does this list really mean anything?

    its some guys opinion

just be open to the fact that he put some different bandsi n there

i mean where were nirvana like 10th?

    least it was different

This list is laughable for atleast one reason... Guided by Voices. Anyone who saw Bob Pollard open in Cincinnati knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Let's be honest with ourselves here: just how "alternative" were Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Alice in Chains/Foo Fighters/STP in the '90s? I can turn on any rock station in the country and hear them. You'd be hard-pressed to hear Sebadoh or the Afghan Whigs on anything but a college station.

The "list" accomplished what any list really, IMO, sets out to do: gets people talking about it and arguing and commenting on it. Do I disagree with some of the selections on it? Absolutely... I think Tom Waits might be the most overrated artist of my lifetime... I think Julian Cope stinks... the Red House Painters are terrible... but they all fit. Did the writer seem to take a "Indie Rock-er Than Thou" approach? Definitely... but I think that's what he was going for. And the fact that many people here and people commenting on the blog had no clue who many of the artists were confirms that, and the inclusion of many of the non-mainstream stuff (which the aforementioned PJ/STP/etc. groups are not part of, much as we may not want to admit it) fits.
Plus there are a couple names I'm not familiar with that I wanna check out (Sebadoh, Giant Sand).

You're in for a fucking treat with Sebadoh... one of my favorite bands.
