  • Again, not a bad tune. I just don't see how people have this as the greatest song ever written.

It might be that people have consistently ignored and put down pop music, and now they've discovered they love pop music because their favorite band released one. They aren't used to that feeling.

"Oh my, the lyrics are stuck in my head." "I've listened to this song 30 times in a row." - It is called pop music folks, that is what it does to you. It is science. I'm not saying it is a bad tune, but it is a pop song and if you give pop songs a chance they will get stuck in your head. Now the question will be for how long.

This actually may bug me the most about Sirens. Fans on here bash bands like Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, and U2 for being radio friendly, but the second PJ does it they are amazing and the only band that can pull off a sincere pop song.
exatly the same doing people hate the song..cos its "sounds pop."or balland or "not their pearl jam " they think isnt "cool to like it"
they didnt even listen it twice, they turn the video before ends and never bother to listen to lyrics ,cos isnt cool..is to "soft " for them..

again, ill use the same exable.,,if madonna tomorrow release an epic song, music and lyrics, and i love it,ill listen it all day,no matter what "rock" people thinks

Sirens is amazing as music, lyrics are so fuckin good, and together as harmony makes it a masterpiece..

and no matter the label, cheesy, poppy, bon jovi..or whatever, does not change the fact how great song it is..

    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

If this song is considered pop, that's fine because I love me some DMB, U2, John Mayer, etc. too.
I don't care 2 shits how anyone categorizes the song/album/band - to me it's just GREAT music.
Looks like the majority of people here love the song, and haters are in the minority.

I love U2. They are in my Top 5.

I don't hate Sirens. I've listened to it about 20 times or so. It is a nice pop song. I've always thought PJ was different than the Top 40, and a song like Sirens in my opinion is a move in the direction of fitting in with the pack instead of standing out. I like pop music, but I guess I wasn't looking to PJ for that style. Same with Ed's lyrics. They are simple and more straightforward lately and some love it, but I preferred the darker, deeper lyrics that you may never figure out.

My dislike for Sirens isn't because it is a 'pop' song it is because for me it's a poorly written song from the music, lyrics and execution of the song. I genuinely feel for the calibre of musicians in the band they can write alot better than this. If you want to put it in the 'pop' genre there is a hell of alot of other acts who write tunes like that alot better.

Equally I could suggest your 'argument' that the song is a masterpiece falls down. It's an opinion and I stand by mine. Pearl Jam and EV have written some great songs and lyrics in their time. This isn't one of them. Again just my opinion, not an argument as you put it.

But if you're understanding the song properly, it's not a cliche. At all.

With Sirens, Pearl jam have just written a bigger anthem than their flagship anthem 'Alive'

    Thoughts?

If a lot of people connect with the emotion in the song, I think it could be very popular. Yes.

I love it... agreed no need to be bigger and/or better, Alive has been in our lives for so long, impossible to duplicate.

First off...I really am starting to think I listened to a different tune than everybody else. The song leaks...some say "oh the next Black" "great tune". I didn't believe it and felt I'd judge for myself when I hear it.

It's released and people are going fucking gaga for this song. My first thought "this sounds like Collective Soul". A few more listens and it's not really getting any better.

I don't hate the tune, but it's nowhere near the level of greatness people are putting it at. Greater than Alive?

I agree. I REALY wanted Sirens to be the epic song that everyone is saying it is but to me it's just an OK tune. And when I compare it to the rest of what PJ has released, it falls to the bottom of the list.

Erm no. Are people that shallow to think cos a song has the word 'love' in it that that will be the reason someone won't like a song? I like plenty of songs that contain the word 'love'.

First listen of the song was the video, I was bored after 2 minutes. But I listened all the way through. I then played the mp3 from 10c and it didn't get any better. I won't be listening again to Sirens or Mind Your Manners for that matter until the album arrives on release date. I understand the song and standby my opinion that it is a cliché, even down to Mike's solo. It's out of place and feels to me like they said "Hey Mike, we know you didn't get any solo's on the last record so here you go play one here".

And before any says it, no I'm not after Ten#2 or Yield#2. I just want my favourite band writing excellent tunes again. I hope the rest of the album is excellent I really do.

Will it become bigger than Alive? Not a chance. Sirens is the next setlist killer IMO, like an Inside Job for example (which I don't think kills a set but I know plenty who do).

It is always nice when they mix things up and play songs out of what has become their "traditional" slots in the set list.

I havent listened to it yet...but, is it really a 'pop song.'

Im just baffled when I hear this description of anything Pearl Jam. When I think 'pop song,' I think Lady Gaga, autotune, and electronic sounds for instruments. Am I wrong here?

I wouldnt classify sirens as a pop song. But, it definitely has an 80's pop rock sound especially late in the song. I also think the song would sound less "poppy" if they just removed all of the piano/keyboards.
