I always thought that man of the hour and dead man went hand in hand. to me dead man is a much better song, man of the hour is great as well but just not as good. I think it had great potential but for some reason it comes up a little short. i'd give it a solid 7.
And I'd give Dead Man a 4 maybe - in find it quite boring and flat.... no accounting for taste! ;) (but Dead Man is EV solo, not PJ, so I would disagree that they are even comparable, or go hand in hand).

wasn't dead man on the off he goes single? it's so funny how one mans gold is another man's junk; in this case the various opinions on songs lol.

Was an 8 until my dad passed away, now the song is a 10. It's beauty and simplicity combined with how I apply it to my life and how spot on it is for describing my dad, it's a perfect 10. Hope to hear this live someday, where I will unabashedly weep like a baby.

when Eddie sings it and he gets to a certain point on the chorus it is like his voice fills the entire room, every crack, every crevice, it is an epic listen on live tracks, the studio version not as much, but most of the live versions have had a magical quality

I don't know, but i'm pretty sure it was written and recorded originally by only EV for Dead Man Walking (and it ultimately wasn't used on the soundtrack). If PJ recorded it for a single, i'd call it an Eddie Vedder cover... or maybe they just used an EV solo song instead of 2 songs performed by PJ? if I am wrong, I would like to know though! I could be mistaken.

I was listening to Prague 06 at work today and the first encore is amazing:

    Dead Man
    Man Of The Hour
    Nothingman
    Leatherman
    Betterman (Save It For Later)
    Alive

I hadn't heard MOTH for quite a while and it sits perfect in an encore. I like the studio version fine enough but it is much better live. Small sounding song with a huge sentiment, it always makes me think of my grandfather who passed away in 1990. If it wasn't played live I'd give it a 6 but some great versions put it up in my estimation to a 9. Still feels more like an Ed solo song to me but I really love it now... :)

There was an official man of the hour single that contained two versions of the song, the regular version and an Ed solo version called demo.

If I'm right in pretty sure it was written and recorded by Ed and then transferred into a full band song.

First time it was played was at Bennaroya Hall which is a version that's very good :)

I actually prefer the Ed solo version, very good..

Pretty sure it's on gremmie.net (the solo version) under Eddie Vedder.

The version in Missoula was played great. Very glad to have finally seen it.

    Good sound on this video.

Even though this doesn't necessarily make my top 20 PJ songs, I give it a solid 9, if not 10. Always thought it was a great, great song. Like many others have said, it sounds much better live and when played live, it really soars to another level.

My grandfather recently passed away in March and this song brings whole new meaning to me, and makes me think of him. I wrote him a letter which went in his casket, and my last line in the farewell letter to him was also the last verse in the song - "Now the man of the hour is taking his final bow, as the curtain comes down, I feel that this is just goodbye for now."

    Beautiful lyrics and and song.

    HARD 7.

I think I'm taking it down from an 8 because my girlfriend and her ex loved it insanely together. Stupid association memeories.
