...they can do whatever they please...

Eh, don't ever sweat this one. Yes, there is a minority of knuckleheads (none in this thread surprisingly) that like to hunt out posts on behalf of the band  and pretend that a poster was actually saying they could tell the band what to do. The rest of us realize that it is just personal desire and passion for the band and their creativity.

I dont really follow this fully in that PJ were undoubtedly richer than i could ever hope after their incredibly sucessful debut record.

oops, i only read the first page.

I don't think money has anything to do with it. It's the lack of storytelling mixed with surface level lyrics. And these lyrics carry their songs more than the music. That's how you end up with Backspacer.

It's awful presumptuous to presume the band was what it was in the 90s because they were "poor."

I also think its doubly unfair to insist that your favorite rock band espouse your views or carry on some sort of quasi-fast or hunger strike (pun intended) so as to satisfy the political, social - or worse - personal musical tastes of their fans.

If you don't like how the band is doing things these days, find a new hero. It must be extremely frustrating and exhausting to be in a band where fans, after 20 years of music, shows and memories, continue to expect something more than those things.

If your heroes are disappointing you, find new heroes. If your social and political guides are in rock bands, take a deep breath and rethink that strategy. You're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Isn't all this just being presumptuous to those that you think are being presumptuous, or am I just being presumtuous?

I'm not rich and I don't have kids. I still find myself way less angry than I was when I was 20. I think age starts to erode you anyways.

I do tend to agree that PJ has lost a bit of touch with their fans. The reasons are reasonable but it has happened.

They don't need the money like they used to and they have families. This seems to have caused serious reductions of tour plans and more ways to play less and make more money (aka festivals) and merchandise.

I can't really blame them, but I do miss the days when they had the hunger to tour a bit more. Someone in a previous post mentioned that we'd see them do a Mega-Tour just for the money. Everything I see says the opposite.

Oh, I saw some of that

Well, and vant - like I said, I was a little drunksy last night. I think I didn't quite bring across what bothered me and got me thinking. I guess in the end just like a lot of other people I am getting a little frustrated with the waiting for the new album and a tour announcement... I do have other musical heros and am happy about this. But PJ will always hold a special place. This is why I bother.

They can do whatever they want. I just needed a good old vent.

    And I agree with this:

    Definitely.
I'm glad they grew up, because it would be pretty pathetic if they didn't. Plus, I wouldn't wish a whole life of anger and frustration upon anyone (and in Mike's case, addiction), so I'm happy they found peace and comfort in their lives. I still have all the music they made back then, plus all the music they make now. Variety rocks. ;)

It's called maturity. It's called parenthood. Call it what you like. The world is different when you look through the eyes of a parent. Try being angry as a parent and see where it gets you. You still have an opinion and you still have principles that you try and stand by but you are a completely different person and I imagine that's even more prevalent among artists. I miss that PJ too but I love the new, modern PJ just as much. I think EV is more of a role model now than he was when he was younger and I'm certain that he's a better and more respected musician. I like the fact that they've changed and developed from angry, tortured souls to happy and mature musicians who want to send a message across but basically just want to make music for us, the ones who have made them rich in the first place. Embrace it, move on.

Yeah we can't go back. We've had money, then not, then not some more  Money changes people. Struggles change people. I wouldn't want to go back to 20 something but I might take 35. Mid 30's is pretty fun. Mid 50's you are seeing the beginning of the end and at low times that can be scary, money or no money. We all shit and we all die and hopefully have enough money to do them both up right.
That what you fear the most could meet you halfway

You said it perfectly! I don't think it is question of money and fame, but age, wisdom, and satisfaction. They have kids, nice marriages, they have come a long way and their music comes true a many changes, but the spirit stay the same. I love every kind of their music.
