I get what the intention is, it just doesn't make any sense.

To have an aforementioned verse, you have to mention a verse. He mentions moss - what he really means to say is "that's the aforementioned moss in the previous verse."

It makes perfect sense, and I don't think it breaks any grammar rules. You don't have to say "verse" for it to be aforementioned. Once he sings the verse it becomes aforementioned.

I disagree and this is exactly why this line has always been a little annoying (besides it just being awkward). The moss would be aforementioned, not the verse. Aforementioned doesn't mean "something that has preceded something else" it means "previously cited". He's called our attention to the moss in the earlier verse so it has been cited and can be referred to as aforementioned. However, simply singing a verse is not citing the verse unless you specifically reference the verse itself during that time, which he doesn't.

I get what you're saying, but it doesn't have to be that specific. I thought, hell, I might be completely wrong and decided to look it up and it can be used both ways.

Either way, he wouldn't be the first songwriter to stretch the rules and all in all it's much more effective the way he worded it.

Well, no doubt that nerdy conversations about grammar don't have a real place in rock n' roll. Otherwise Wishlist would be a complete disaster. But it's a great song, as is who you are, regardless of how I feel about that one word.

Out of curiosity, though, where have you found that "aforementioned" can be used in this way. I would love to find out I'm wrong as that line has always bugged me.

well, if you wanna be all technical, it's not a 'wheel' on a boat, it's a 'helm'... :ugeek:

Anyone remember when MTV showed videos, and they had that greasy cabby in their commercials? "It's like rain, on a rainy day!"

Also liked his Black Dog version: "Hey hey Mama said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you....sweat!"

Reading this back-and-forth about 'the moss' I'm reminded of the guys in the bleachers from the movie Major League. After a home run they argue for several minutes whether it was 'too high' or 'too far' or something like that and one guy finally says 'who gives a shit, it's gone.'

Black: "Can't it be miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnneeeeee..." Only needs to last a few seconds. Too long ruins it, Hamilton 11's version was almost a piss break.

Yeah Ed said that before playing Leatherman I believe at a show I was at. He said 'I don't think I even own a copy of this...' My brother and I just looked at each other like 'OK?...' :?

I like this thread though! I think we have a right to dissect lyrics and their grammatical correctness . . . while song writing has some leeway, it's fun to find mistakes....
