    But then again, I'm not a Brit, and i was not alive at the time.

    I can tell you the song Under Pressure (bowie\queen) is largely about the effect her policies had on the economy and the people.

    [even though i think this is somewhat unfair, fortunes changed a few times during her reign, and overall i think it could be argued her policies provided a net benefit to the country, even if it was squandered after her resignation]

    Watch Margaret Thatcher Explain Why the Euro Is a Terrible Idea in 1990 - maybe this will give you a taste of why she is loathed universally on "the left". She didn't want to give up fiscal sovereignty to a supranational body [and as i said, she was firmly against wealth redistribution].
    Here watch the clip from this point, to hear just how far she is willing to go in her stance

    here is another little "famous" bit where she talks about what is essentially wealth redistribution -- although she actually insinuates that the policies will allow BOTH rich and poor to be poorer.

    She destroyed so many towns by closing all the mines where for generations men had worked.
    She had no compassion for people who earned less than others. So the rich got richer and the poor got poorer.
    She made all the troubles in Ireland a million times worse, it was like she thrived on all the upset and fear it caused.
    I don't pretend to be a politician and know every single fact. I do know when she left Downing street everything got so much better.

    Politics aside, considering she took office around 1980, that's a pretty amazing accomplishment for a women at that point in history. Especially considering she was the daughter of a grocer. (I'm concluding that your family's rank in society and class has an impact in British politics)

    I've heard of Cleopatra and Joan of Arc.

    Interesting after looking up the first two ... Golda was the only one whose people did not try to assasinate.
