Intersting .. I think I see why she might not be the most loved person on this forum .... :think:DriftingByTheStorm wrote:no.
she vehemently opposed wealth redistribution, socialism, and supranational government.
She actually considered herself a libertarian, and worked towards those goals openly.
However her staunch fiscal conservatism lead, in practice, to a tightening of the reigns, which in the short term had some negative consequences in the economy.
She lowered income taxes, cut public spending, raised interest rates to fight inflation, and did more or less what you would expect a real fiscal conservative to do. What probably lead her in to trouble in the public eye was that (unlike the Fed over here with their ridiculous "dual mandate") she eschewed the notion of trying to influence the employment rate directly, and focused instead at the opposite end of the mandate spectrum towards reduction or limiting of inflation. Of course, limiting the amount of "money creation" limits the amount of "money" available to people in the short term (and most people are too stupid to realize it saves them the VALUE of their money in the long term).
But moreover, she wasn't afraid to call liberalism out as a form of socialism, and i'm pretty sure it was the fighting she did against globalist & statist interests that lead to her being endlessly slandered (to this day).
But then again, I'm not a Brit, and i was not alive at the time.
I can tell you the song Under Pressure (bowie\queen) is largely about the effect her policies had on the economy and the people.
[even though i think this is somewhat unfair, fortunes changed a few times during her reign, and overall i think it could be argued her policies provided a net benefit to the country, even if it was squandered after her resignation]
Watch Margaret Thatcher Explain Why the Euro Is a Terrible Idea in 1990 - maybe this will give you a taste of why she is loathed universally on "the left". She didn't want to give up fiscal sovereignty to a supranational body [and as i said, she was firmly against wealth redistribution].
Here watch the clip from this point, to hear just how far she is willing to go in her stance
here is another little "famous" bit where she talks about what is essentially wealth redistribution -- although she actually insinuates that the policies will allow BOTH rich and poor to be poorer.
This is one of her more famous quotes (although it is usually abbreviated and paraphrased) ...Thatcher wrote:I think they've made the biggest financial mess that any government's ever made in this country for a very long time, and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them. They then start to nationalise everything, and people just do not like more and more nationalisation, and they're now trying to control everything by other means. They're progressively reducing the choice available to ordinary peopleBe Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

She destroyed so many towns by closing all the mines where for generations men had worked.
She had no compassion for people who earned less than others. So the rich got richer and the poor got poorer.
She made all the troubles in Ireland a million times worse, it was like she thrived on all the upset and fear it caused.
I don't pretend to be a politician and know every single fact. I do know when she left Downing street everything got so much better.0

From Billy Bragg, Calgary, AB, Canada, on the death of Margaret Thatcher:
This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing; of why domestic growth is driven by credit, not by real incomes; of why tax-payers are forced to top up wages; of why a spiteful government seeks to penalise the poor for having an extra bedroom; of why Rupert Murdoch became so powerful; of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society.
Raising a glass to the death of an infirm old lady changes none of this. The only real antidote to cynicism is activism. Don't celebrate - organise!0

Politics aside, considering she took office around 1980, that's a pretty amazing accomplishment for a women at that point in history. Especially considering she was the daughter of a grocer. (I'm concluding that your family's rank in society and class has an impact in British politics)Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

I've heard of Cleopatra and Joan of Arc.
Interesting after looking up the first two ... Golda was the only one whose people did not try to assasinate.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

"Thatcher is remembered as The Iron Lady only because she possessed completely negative traits such as persistent stubbornness and a determined refusal to listen to others. Every move she made was charged by negativity; she destroyed the British manufacturing industry, she hated the miners, she hated the arts, she hated the Irish Freedom Fighters and allowed them to die, she hated the English poor and did nothing at all to help them, she hated Greenpeace and environmental protectionists, she was the only European political leader who opposed a ban on the Ivory Trade, she had no wit and no warmth and even her own Cabinet booted her out. She gave the order to blow up The Belgrano even though it was outside of the Malvinas Exclusion Zone - and was sailing AWAY from the islands. When the young Argentinean boys aboard The Belgrano had suffered a most appalling and unjust death, Thatcher gave the thumbs up sign for the British press. Iron? No. Barbaric? Yes.
She hated feminists even though it was largely due to the progression of the women's movement that the British people allowed themselves to accept that a Prime Minister could actually be female. But because of Thatcher, there will never again be another woman in power in British politics, and rather than opening that particular door for other women, she closed it. Thatcher will only be fondly remembered by sentimentalists who did not suffer under her leadership, but the majority of British working people have forgotten her already, and the people of Argentina will be celebrating her death. As a matter of recorded fact, Thatcher was a terror without an atom of humanity."0
