I think it didn't 'flop', but it didn't sell great numbers either.PU38569 wrote:Backspacer was the "hey I want to be popular again" album that flopped.
What I agree on is that it was the intention to make an album as easily assessible as possible.
BoB said in an interview that he wanted the songs to sound as simple as possible.
I was shocked when I read this because I was so thrilled they got BoB back as producer since he is responsible for the bands best records (No Code and Yield).
Backspacer is a pretty good rock record.
It is easy to listen to.
But it misses any Pearl Jam atmosphere.
I hope with the new record, they'll go back to more complex songs without compromises that challenge the fans.0 -

The songs with the shallow, straight forward, High School-written lyrics without finesse are the worst (Amongst The Waves, The Fixer, The End).
I think Backspacer is a bad Pearl Jam album amongst Pearl Jam albums. And it's a bad album compared to all other albums.
If backspacer would have been released by any other artist, you all would laught at it."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -
I think I'll listen to my vinyl Backspacer today, a gift from a kind friend on the board. I'm really looking forward to it!

PS whatever happened to the 'jam' part?? It's like they are always rushing through their songs now just so they can fulfill an OCD need to play a diverse set list...
The better live shows to this day still had fewer songs, longer songs, more passionate songs.
Anyone else feel like they're just blurting it out fast and moving on to the next one...?
Second that...give me a 9 minute Daughter with some whole-crowd singing every day of the week.0 -

You left the worst offender of the "shallow straight forward, HS-written" lyrics....Unthought Known.
I've certainly heard worse albums than Backspacer, but it's just totally missing the lyrical and musical depth that the rest of their albums has and that's what has always drawn me back to them.0 -
I LOVE Backspacer. Actually, one of my favorites. Some really incredible songs off of it...

I have gone back and forth with my feelings towards this album but I feel I'm starting to finally come full circle. I really enjoyed the album when it first came out up until about early 2011 and for some reason I just grew bored of it. I tend to listen to bootlegs more than studio albums and had been listening to boots from 2009-2012 the most. I believe this is what made me "bored" of the BS songs.
Recently though, I listened to the studio album all the way through a couple of times and have fallen in love all over again. I forgot how much I enjoyed the production value (especially compared to the production of Avocado). There are some subtle effects in various songs that are missing in the live versions, which I had forgotten about. I really enjoyed the flow of the album and its brevity in length. Not to mention, I think Ed sounds damn good on the album.2008: Bonnaroo
2010: Bristow
2012: Atlanta
2013: Charlottesville, Charlotte
2014: Cincinnati
2016: Greenville, Hampton, Raleigh (cancelled), Columbia, Lexington

Will have to listen to it again. But I remember his voice cracking/struggling throughout the album. And that it sounded like there was some digital effect/compression or something on it to have it sound weirdly "crips".
But I haven't listen to the album in over a year I think... so I may be way wrong. Mostly listening to live boots as you.
But as I recall, Eddies voice on Avocado and Backspacer was wearing my ears out fast."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -

Well, it is certainly more harder edge/rough voice compared to Binaural or Riot Act. I personally enjoy Ed's raspy screams. I enjoy the vocals on every PJ album, but I think Ed sounds more comfortable on BS than Avocado. Vocals on Amongst the Waves, Force of Nature, and The End are ear candy for me.

I love all the PJ records. Pearl Jam is one of the few bands I listen to without a critical sense. Every record has it's own flavour and ALWAYS has a song (lyric, music) that draws me into it, or connects me to the LP as a whole in my experience. I hate listening to the same kind of record over and over. Some bands make a complete living off of that cookie cutter formula. Not Pearl Jam. Not my most favourite band ever in the world. From age 13 to 35 I've grown and changed along with the band - and nothing makes me cringe than the thought of them trying to recapture the vibe of Ten or Vs or any other 'old' record for that matter. Its obvious from this thread that there are many levels of criticism, appreciation, utter disdain for Backspacer. My sense of things are that the long periods between records is the source point for all the upset. People think that just because the band is away for long periods, that means they've had ALL THIS TIME to come up with something epic, some 4 disc quadrophonicbinauraltenangsty masterpiece. They have lives and it's not about with making YOUR favourite record. It's about a continued sense of integrity and making art the way they want to - filled with Ole's and ballads about death, simple heartfelt lyrics, or whatever the fuck they want - on their time. Yearning for something different, and complaining about is worn out. We all can't be 'love it all' fans like myself - so if you really dislike Backspacer, donate it, send it to someone you know who might enjoy it, start a kid off on the record as an introduction to the band, use it was a beer coaster, go out and break the thing ala' disco record night. 8-)www.cluthelee.com0

Wow I can't believe anyone would say The End and Unthought Known are high school lyrics. Can't wrap my head around that statement but to each his own. I'm so glad I get the depth of those songs. Can't really listen to The End because it's so deep and meaningful to me. I like BS a lot but I like all PJ albums a lot. With every one there's songs I love and songs I skip. I don't usually compare album to album, I usually just enjoy each one for what it is.
I think Johnny Guitar is one of their worst songs ever but I think Unthought Known is one of their best. I also love Got Some and GSMF. I've been a fan since the beginning and I dig the last 2 albums so the theory that people who've loved PJ since the beginning don't like the last 2 albums doesn't apply to me. Love Avocado as well. And cannot wait for the new album. Getting very excited for it. Nothing like the anticipation of new PJ music.

I can never hear Unthought Known enough...not ever. It makes me feel really good and I love songs that build. Build me another song as good as that for the new album please.

Don't forget to be polite (see Posting Guidelines) on this thread and with any criticisms. It's ok to not care for every song but it's not ok to be rude about it. Thanks everyone.Falling down,...not staying down0 -

Completely disagree with the OP. While I will admit that it is not my favorite album it definitely has some quality songs on it. Yeah there are a few weak ones mixed into the lot but so what? Unthought Known, the End, Force of Nature, badass tunes...0

Yeah, most of us were in denial just because it was a new Pearl Jam studio album and at that point we would accept anything new - but come on guys! Compared to everything else its well below par! I cant actually think any time in the past 2 yrs that I thought to myself "I could really listen to Backspacer right now!"
Come on - just admit it and we can all move on...
If Ole and Of the Earth are anything to judge by, my hopes are not too high for the next album...
It kills me to write this by the way!
