Has enough time passed now for us all to come together and admit the fact that Backspacer was just awful! Yeah, most of us were in denial just because it was a new Pearl Jam studio album and at that point we would accept anything new - but come on guys! Compared to everything else its well below par! I cant actually think any time in the past 2 yrs that I thought to myself "I could really listen to Backspacer right now!"

Come on - just admit it and we can all move on...

If Ole and Of the Earth are anything to judge by, my hopes are not too high for the next album...

It kills me to write this by the way!

Shut your mouth. I really liked that album. It made me renew my club membership. What is your favorite album then? :P

"the Fixer" I can identify with, I try to fix things or people everyday. (I'm OCD a bit, maybe alot)
I've always been a fixer. Johnny Guitar, YES, I happen to be loyal. And I wait. ;)

I disagree. Not my favorite album but still a great piece of art. Even though it got overplayed you have to admit that Just Breathe is a beautiful song. Unthought Known for me was an instant classic that I can see being a sing along at shows for many years to come. The band has changed and grown over the years and so have we. So we have to expect something different each time. I don't particularly care for the artwork, just not my thing. But it's still cool and I'm sure the band is proud of it. I think backspacer is an album you need to let sit for a while and age and eventually you'll pick it up to revisit it and you will appreciate more than you ever did on the first listen. Just my opinion. To each his own...

When a band has been around as long as PJ you need to wait years for a new album to be respected. Give it 5-7 years and see how people feel. When Binaural came out a lot of people thought it was awful, now people hail it. Time will tell.

Shut it! Log out now. Cancel your LOVE. Don't buy it. No one has a gun to your head. We are here voluntarily and we pay. You must be all kinds of mixed up.

Exactly. Look at how many fans disappeared when they didn't understand No Code too. Eventually many returned. Who knows how we'll feel about BS in the next 5 years. Some may still hate it while others might call it a classic.

I admit when my friends and family stress, I write them the lyrics of "Just Breathe", and they can deal with stress easier, It's not my fav. But it's very well written.

I'm glad you have an opinion.

Backspacer was the "hey I want to be popular again" album that flopped.

PS whatever happened to the 'jam' part?? It's like they are always rushing through their songs now just so they can fulfill an OCD need to play a diverse set list...

The better live shows to this day still had fewer songs, longer songs, more passionate songs.

Anyone else feel like they're just blurting it out fast and moving on to the next one...?

Evenflow used to be like a funk groove song, now it's like listening to Japanese people arguing in fast forward.

People play fast when they are nervous. Or just running through the motions. What's the deal? Where's the feeling?

I remember rearviewmirror at MSG at the end of the last tour having like a 12 second jam to it. No heart. It was embarassing. Where's the part where you channel out the bad stuff and put it in the rearviewmirror again? Where's the anything, again?

Backspacer seems to epitomize this approach. Let's just rip it out and pat ourselves on the back and get on to the next one. The set list collectors would rather hear 17 2 minute renditions than 2 17 minute renditions. But that's how it used to be.

I really really really really hope the next album is something worth hanging on to.

Maybe we need a drummer change again to rekindle some flame? Matt Cameron's skills are so much better showcased with soundgarden. PJ are entitled to get old, and get interested in a different sound, but so then maybe they can get someone who is more tailored for boring, cutsie wootsie wuss punk rhythms and free up Matt Cameron and Soundgarden to save rock humanity?

I really like the new soundgarden album. It reminds me of the whole point of this mess which is to kick a lot of ass.

I thought it was a nice breath of fresh air. I mean it obviously isn't their best but at least they dropped all the political BS and made a nice, easy to listen to record. The songs are much better live, too. I don't spin it as much as I should.

So 'PJ are entitled to get old' but Matt isn't? You do realise Matt is the oldest band member don't you?

BE on high alert. We have a H8r among us. The soundgarden site sucks. It is up to Mr. Cameron who he what's to work with. Maybe you should go check out SG's site.... You'll be back.

No one will ask or force you to hear it. I can't believe you have fear. There is only one thing in life that I'm sure of, Pearl Jam. If it doesn't make sense, (never true) I keep playing it until I get it. Maybe it's not for you?

Since you went there, I think what's Not for Me, is Backspacer, which was the whole point of this thread. I don't like 2 minute songs by bands that can do better, and 2 minute versions of live versions of songs, just so the band can vomit out 45 song set lists to appease the collector fans.

but I do love 15,000 post threads of "pics that make EV cute!!!!"

no, I enjoy BS. Just wish it was a longer album now knowing it would be almost 4 years until the next one...

There might be more to it than just it's being so far apart from the new album. Substantively, the songs all felt really "light," really short, both time-wise but also depth-wise. I think if the songs were a bit longer, they would've naturally had to evolve away from what they became. In other words, add 40 seconds to "Supersonic" or "Johnny Guitar" and they might be very, very different (for the better in my opinion).

I guess I hadn't thought of it that way until I read your post. Thanks!

I'm not a huge Matt fan myself, but in fairness, the tempo issue isn't always his fault. Sometimes the songs start with a guitar part before the drums which sets the time. It's not all on Matt.
