I was wondering the same thing about the financial backing for this project...I watched the show twice and came to the conclusion they are wasting money ...wish they would send someone to college, feed the hungry or something that would help a human.

You do understand that saving the animals of the oceans and such IS helping humans, yeah?

its a delicate balance isnt it?? but i refuse to feel more emotional about cetaceans than other marine lifeforms.

i have this argument with my father every time he advocates the killing of great whites. hes a smart man but it horrifies me he doesnt seem to get it. mind you he lives on an island not that far from a known great white shark environment.

So you've got one country who would like to harvest a number of whales, several countries (mostly Australia?) knows this isn't research but is willing to let it slide and a group of highly persistant people who are down there trying to stop them.

Solution: Bring all three groups together and agree on a number that the Japanese CAN take- unhindered. The number will be less than the Japanese want and more than the rest of the world wants. Then asign and share the costs of maintaining a group to monitor the actions of the Whalers. The Sea Shepherd, the Japanese, and the rest of the world gives and takes. Everyone concedes something, everyone gets something and no one dies.
That's sensible, but also how it IS done. The international whaling comittee (dont remember it's exact name) sets quotas for what's allowable to fish for "scientific purposes". And although they are quite high and maybe more than science strictly would need, the general ban is in place. Basically only Norway and Japan have much interest in whaling and are keen to allow more. The rest of this comittee are comprised of countries who doesn't really have much of an interest anymore, at least not enough to withstand the bad public PR that can be rallied behind cute mammals in the sea.

So today's practice is the dirty compromise that leaves all parties a little unhappy. The whale populations have recovered a deal from their crash, although I do not know the latest numbers.

    Peace

Not many people see the connection between humans and the natural world anymore. The more we destroy the environment, the more we destroy ourselves. Unfortunately, biological necessity has given way to economic/material necessity. We are cyborgs.

At least they were competent enough to get a few weeks out of their $3M super boat, the Ady Gil, before sinking it. I'm actually surprised they were able to just get it from L.A. to the whaling waters without scuttling it.

Amazingly enough, there appears to be enough wealthy donors out there to support the construction of the Ady Gil 2 whose cost is estimated between $3M - $5M.
The wrecking of the Ady Gil was, I think, the one scene I've actually watched of that show. Is it just me or did it seem like they went out of their way to get rammed, like they shut their motor off and just sat there? Like it was a caculated cost, worth it to make a point about how aggressive the Japanese are about killing their whales. The fact that they arlready have another backer, willing to throw another $3-5M at Ady Gil II, lends credence to that view.

Just reading through this thread for the first time reminds me of the summer of 1970 when I worked for UAL cleaning airplanes between semesters. My hair was half way down my back, not that that means anything but... one night one of the mechanics saw me and belted out, "Hey guys, looks like we have a HIPPIE on the cleaning crew. HAHAHA!" One of the other mechanics I had recently met snapped back at the guy, "He's working, isn't he? There are no hippies here!" That was cool!

As for the video posted above, good enough reason for me to send a donation to the Sea Shephard Conservation Society. No hippies there. Those people are working!

The activists are volunteers, and I just think it's pointless to squirt water at another ship as an act of protest.

The best moment of that show is when the Japanese ship completely smashed the brand new vessel

i agree with wot they are doing but i didnt like the way they tried to interfere with the faroe islanders ...theres so many things us humans SHOULD be doing so i suppose every bit helps although if we are just talking about the sea wot about all the fish that get thrown back into the sea DEAD just because of quotas ...i know fisher men have to make money and its not really there fault but maybe changing the size of the nets that are used ,farming fish would be a better way imo.
its not just whales that need saving the blue finned tuna needs help christ all animals except cats, dogs, and humans need help .

    i know wot i mean :D

heard a japanese fellow the other day trying to justify the commercial whale hunt mascarading as scientific research by equating the consumption of whale meat in japan to aussies eating kangaroo meat.. only trouble is we dont eat kangaroo meat in the way hes trying to establish. he went on to say that as an island nation reliant on the surrounding sea for its sustainence, japan has a right to hunt whales. my question to him is well if thats the case why not hunt whales around your home islands? why come all the way down to the southern oceans to hunt? i also thought him speaking this way totally negated japans insistence that their hunts are for research purposes(like we ever thought they were) sadly so long as the australian govt chooses to sit on its hands through its insistence that its doing something by going through the international courts(cause we all know how efficent it is) japan will continue its killing.

The Japanese eat a lot of Whale meat. There is never enough for demand so sometimes Dolphin is sold as Whale meat. Dolphin meat has too many toxins and humans get sick eating it. I still won't eat Shark fin because of this strange ness. Many sharks die horribly for just the fins. Can another culture criticize another culture because of their food resources? I have thought about this for many years and I still have no answers for myself.

The Animal Planet show is just Jello for my brain. except for that boat crash..... ;)

I know its been discussed before but after watching several episodes tonight I am further reminded of the total failure that is the Sea Shepherd. They obviously lack a safety management system, they have a very, very poor communication system in place and are clearly ill prepared to be doing what they are doing.

I give them credit for operating in the environment they're in and obviously my view may be highly tainted due to the filming and editing of the film crew but even considering this I feel the evidence is there.

If I were any of the benifactors or major donors I would seriously question the entire operation.

What type of training do the volunteers recieve?
Is there a thourough safety management system in place?
Is there a culture of risk management and loss prevention?

Sorry whales- your protectors are in need of protection from themselves.

Their intentions were good, but unfortunately intentions don't count for much...just ask W.
  • A law should be written, backed up by god so nobody could argue it, and have every whaler who kills a mother while the calf is present taken into a field with their children and shot in front of them, and see how far whaling gets after that.

    Gosh I'm really sorry.
I have adopted 44 whales since 1993. All Humpbacks. I buy all their albums.
We lost track ... no emails , texts, or phone calls. (I think they are rude or have been killed)

Whales ? What is going on?

The subject of saving whales came up elsewhere and I looked to see what we had here in the way of whale thread and this is all I found.  I find the original post amusing considering Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is alive and well and stronger than ever in it's work to preserve marine wildlife.
