Why does this seem like another American "intervention" in the making? I thought this CNN article did a decent job of explaining why we might actually want to care about this situation rather than sitting back and continuing to ignore problems abroad.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/16/world/africa/mali-six-reasons/index.htmlAre we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
I AM MINE0 -
Seems that France has took the lead in the ass kicking business.
Ironic that a US led UN bombing of Libya is responsible for heavily arming al-Qaeda in a country the size of Afghanistan.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -
I wonder if this gives a look into the future of what may happen in Syria once Assad falls?
A lot of weapons, no security, and groups of fanatics = bad timesBe Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -
Oh goody, another war. What do these world leaders do? Throw a dart at a map pinned to the wall and say, "OK boys, let's go kick some ass"?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

No silly, they spin the globe and drop their finger. Darts are too dangerous. :PPick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -
Apparently al-Qaeda is there...
and Mali is also very rich in natural resources...
The US is currently providing intelligence and wouldn't be surprised if we have a few special forces dudes poking around.0 -
Jonny P.-- Spin the Globe War! A new game from Hasbro?
Peacefrompaul-- Resources and religion. Who'd have ever thought?
...
Anyone wanna lay odds on our (the US) chances of getting in on this?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
We already are involved in one way or another. Leon Panetta said that we are providing intel to French forces which could mean we have the CIA in the area or quite possibly special forces.
As for a full on ground operation, I don't think so0 -
For anyone not following the story, France launched their attack after their intelligence detected militants moving south to capture 2 key towns that could have set up for the capital of Mali to be attacked. The militants are very well armed with munitions taken from Libya's armorys.
I've read stories in the past year that are for the most part overlooked by the majority of us. The citizens of Mali practice a less strict (sane) version of Islam. These guys are overtaking towns with brute force. Public floggings, amputations, and executions .... standard fare to set examples. Women are being supressed. No music. No fun.
They are dug in deep and are looking to expand their territory. France was surprised with the sophistication of their weaponry.
It's not quite as simple as just spinning the globe and playing pin the tail on the terrorist. The threat is real and the reaction is justified.
I'm just glad France is picking up the tab this time.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

Go ahead France, if it was us I'd be against it from day one. I still don't like it, but it's not my place to speak for France.0 -

From what I saw, France doesn;t have drones. So I think Leon is referring to us using drones for them.
But I could be wrong, I scanned it.hippiemom = goodness0 -

He never said that, but you could be right. Just seems like an area we might put down a small SEAL team as well.0 -
The Algerian's have raided the oil field and taken in back over from the fanatics. Reports of captives being killed in the raid are ranging from 6 to 40.
The raiders were letting Muslims go and killing Christains and infidels according to eye witnesses.

Hey, it's the thread no one cares about.
