A patented seed is a seed that is the product of human intervention and has been claimed as intellectual property. Most patents in question, however, are patents by the company Monsanto on their genetically engineered seeds.0

scary...
Without the ability to patent and profit from our efforts there would be little incentive to develop the technology that thousands of farmers use today.

yeah the first bill in the new congress was not to do anything to help those affected by hurricane sandy, but michelle bachmann introduced the first bill and it was to repeal obamacare....as if that was ever going to pass considering it failed 39 other previous votes :fp:"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

yup
i can buy a seed, grow a plant, harvest it, but i can not keep some of the harvest to grow more plants next year. :fp:81 is now off the air

all of our efforts should be done with one goal in mind...profit! everything should be a commodity, even the basic necessities for life, food! patent it and profit!
i filed a patent on walking the old lady across the street..hopefully some day i make a killing on it (no pun intended)0 -

Of course you can. Just don't use genetically modified seeds which are the intellectual property of the likes of Monsanto. But of course, genetically modified seeds are said to give better crop yield, therefore more profits. Used even if we don't know how in the long run, these genetically modified crops affects our bodies and minds.
These seeds are patented, you pay to use what is patented. Even if you generate 'copies' of said item (here a seed), they are still under that patent and the intellectual property of the 'one' who initially filed. Whether one agrees or not, that's the rule.0 -
I'm pretty ignorant on this stuff, so forgive me, but I thought part of the concern was that eventually the genetically modified seeds would be all that we have left?redrock wrote:81 wrote:unsung wrote:Monsanto is probably the most evil and dangerous company in the world.

Seems like a hard thing to regulate.
Anyway, I've been told organic crops yield the same as bio-engineered crops. Why would a farmer want to re-seed using a Monsanto product?Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

does anyone know if the farmer needs to sign a form consenting to these rules when they purchase the seed?81 is now off the air

81 - I don't know how Monsanto (for example) packages these seeds but I would have thought that the patent number would be printed on the packaging somewhere which is considered notification. Should one purchase a pack of these seeds, one implicitly accepts the rules and regulations relative to the patent. The onus is on the purchaser to make himself aware of what these rules are. That's how it would normally work. Similar to the 'copyright' or 'trademark' notification on goods.
Motodc - it is a huge concern and I really hope it doesn't come to that. That farmers will continue to have a choice (as the consumer). Whilst I can understand the immediate perceived benefits, there it's just not enough research on long term impact, whether on nature or on humans and other animals.Post edited by redrock on0 -

That's a bit of an exaggeration, I think.
I'm pretty sure that there are many more dangerous companies in the world. Haliburton and Bain Capital come to mind.
but yes... GMO foods are... scary.0 -

i'll do some digging tonight and report back on the monsanto findings.81 is now off the air

It's such a complex issue this protecting your intellectual rights. This link gives a bit of insight (a brief summary of a case where a farmer has been sued).

A simple google of monsanto patented seeds will keep you busy reading for a very long time!0 -

Agreed. Monsanto is evil and just as bad, they are backed by the FDA. Do we really want to eat food manufactured by the company that created Agent Orange? If so, I'll be happy to tell you about the problems my dad has suffered because of it. And we eat that shit? No thanks. Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

I think that is part of the long term plan. Already we see fewer and fewer varieties of the crops that are GMO. Did you know that there is bread that won't mold for 6 months? Real food goes bad if your food doesn't then I would be hesitant to eat it.Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Well apparently, they use a microwave to kill mold spores. And I was wrong it's not 6 months it's 60 days, my bad. http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/01/08/texas-company-claims-new-microwave-keeps-bread-mold-free-for-60-days/Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

to buy monsanto seeds, you need to sign a "Monsanto Technology/Stewardship Agreement"
found this info on a seed selling company's advertisment of a Monsanto Soybean
http://www.stewartseeds.com/products/Do ... 2500R2.pdfThe purchase/bailment/transfer of these seeds conveys no license under said patents to use
these seeds or perform any of the methods covered by these patents. A license must first be
obtained before these seeds can be used in any way. See your seed dealer to sign a
Monsanto Technology/Stewardship Agreement ("MTSA"). Progeny of these seeds cannot be
cleaned or used as planting seed or transferred to others for planting. These seeds may only
be offered for sale and distribution by authorized seed companies or their dealers. Before
opening a bag of seed, be sure you read, understand and accept the stewardship
requirements for the biotechnology traits expressed in the seed as set forth in the Monsanto
Technology/Stewardship Agreement that you signed. By opening and using the bag of seed,
you are reaffirming your obligation to comply with the most recent stewardship requirements.81 is now off the air
