I'm single, don't have any kids, am happy with my not too flash house, am on an ok salary, all my friends here in NZ are married with babies so what I might spend on going out here, or kids, or a partner, or having a flash house, I spend on overseas trips, or that's how it's working out at the moment anyway.

This, pretty much (subsitute NZ for UK...)
I have a decent job in the Civil Service in the UK and usually save my holidays for going to see PJ on tour. In the last 4 years, I've done shows in Australia, NYC, LA, Canada and Europe.
Tours are announced with plenty of time to sort out costs for flights, hotels and of course, the tickets themselves. Yes, it's not cheap, but it's no different from going on holiday each summer, but adding in PJ shows for the mix!
If I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't do it.

I don't quite know how people afford to do it. The one tour I went to the most shows on (Riot Act--nine shows over 4 months) worked perfectly for me because--for one--Pearl Jam used to tour most of the country back then. I started in Denver, 7 hour drive from my home (and another place that doesn't get played any more), saw State College cause my now-wife lived in Virginia at the time so we road tripped out there and got a $35 priceline room at a golf resort, then went to visit my sister in San Diego so saw that show, then Vegas and Phoenix on the way back to NM... then end of the 2nd leg visited now-wife again in DC, so saw the DC show, traveled up to see her parents in NJ and went to Camden, then stayed in Manhattan and went to both MSG shows, the only bulk that we really spent a few hundred bucks on with the hotel for two nights, etc.
San Francisco 2006 was another good one. Stayed with a friend who lives there and got to 3 shows in 4 nights. That's the way to go but they don't do too many like that.
Those were the days. I know I'll never get to do that many shows again. Most tours these days I would be happy to get to one show and ecstatic for more than one! How people go to 8-12 shows IN A ROW, I have no idea!

I used to spend a lot of money going to sporting events - Pats, Red Sox, Celtics, etc. But in the HD/man cave era in which we now live I just rather watch from home, eat my own food, drink my own booze, never wait for a bathroom, and never freeze my ass off. The money I used to spend in Foxboro I now spend on PJ.

We never could follow a tour, too much responsibilities ...
good thing to cause I spent enough just seeing a show each leg or so.
Still paying the cards down and do not regret our fun and frivolous times.
I met a fella though in the elevator when we traveled to see a show
that was just plain rich ... Daddy kind of rich.
I should sell rice krispie treats to pay for my next tour...
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
I should sell rice krispie treats to pay for my next tour...
Put me down for three.
ok! that will cover ticket fees...NEXT?!?!

Thursday - See them in Columbus, where they live.
Friday - Work and then drive to Indy
Sunday - See them in Cleveland.
Monday - Bufffalo, NY.
It's exactly what I did, except I don't live in Columbus and I didn't work while in Indy.

Never traveled for more than a few shows, but here is how we do it:
Use my United Miles credit card to pay for everything, and then use the resulting miles for free air travel
Regularly check the internet for great deals at nice hotels
Don't spend money on alcohol (wife and I don't really drink)
Make a conscious effort to regularly skip pricey gigs/dinners/sporting events...this makes me feel more comfortable when deciding to travel for a show.

Monday - Bufffalo, NY.
Friday, 5/21 - NYC
That's five shows and only two days off work. Add the PJ20 festival and that's two more shows with 0 days off work.
7 shows and 2 days off work.
As others have said, it could easily be done without taking too many days off work for other stuff.
