Some people make more money than others, or spend way less than others. Some people live cheap and don't have kids or mortgages. It just depends on lifestyle and combined with salary combined with desire. I personally now have and will again sacrifice to travel for a show. J have to save up for it and deny myself things I would normally allow, like vinyl and eating out and buying... well anything but the necessities, really. But j live a simple lifestyle - just rent an apartment, and don't have a car... i can get by on little when i want to save (but i live in one of the most expensive places in the world, so it's still not easy). Other people just make lots of money. My future plan is to win the lottery (oh, and get a raise, which is happening soon, yay!), but since I can't say exactly when that lottery plan will be completed, I will just have to limit my travel or scrimp if I decide I just have to go. And hope for lots of northwest shows. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

I don't think she is! ... hell... isn't the average north american carrying more than that in consumer debt anyway? Scary but true.81 wrote:

En La Clandestinidad Telford, PA by way of Kansas City, MO and Milwaukee, WI, Phoenix, AZ and East Greenbush, NY Posts: 3,694So, I have done three "tours".
I am a single guy which helps - +1
I have a crappy paying job (typically) - -1
I don't save much - -1
No credit card debt +1
On the LA 09 trip (including SD), I was living in PHX at the time and drove and then after each show stayed in a pilot truck stop
in my car! I'd say the no hotel is a +2!
For the Philly night 4 I did a one day trip, flew in and flew out the next morning - slept in the airport! (BEST trip I've ever taken) +1
In 2010 I did Hartford through NYC. My parents lived in Albany so that was my main springboard area. +1
Used their car which saved rental and then took a train to NYC. +1
Stayed in a motel on night in Providence between Boston and Newark on parents dime I might add. - 0
Payed for a fairly cheap still $85 at the Jane Hotel in between MSG 1 and 2 - -1
Lastly for Alpine last year, I happened to move to Milwaukee and was able to stay with someone I worked with in the area for free - +2
And was able to park my car at the resort each day since my ticket buddy stayed there so got easy access back to the highway after each show. No traffic!! +1
So my grand total is:+7
I'd say that's a pretty frugal 11 shows!! Except for all the merch and tickets I spent loot on, but I am still alive and not on welfare, so I guess I done good! :corn:Formerly Brew Crew Tix

I'm a smart girl... I found a job that pays me to tour... I mean travel...
Same thing!

I've always wondered the same thing. I don't make a lot of money & I'm not good at saving, despite not having kids, so I'm definitely not one of the people you're asking about. But the few times I have traveled to see the band or Ed's solo shows I've combined it with trips I had already been meaning to take, like to see my grandparents in Memphis or my best friend in LA.0

What would help really, is to start a PJ coughsurfing network. Will def. cut costs on hotels etc. And you meet fellow fans. Win-win in my opinion...0

same here...I'm doing my PhD at the moment, so I work meeting deadlines, presenting at conferences and writing papers, and when and where I work is up to me. In Vienna, I live in the cheapest possible tiny room (9m²) in a rather shabby flat, but the price can't be beat, and most of my things are at my parents' place, where I have an actually nice room lol. I have them covering my living expenses, only paying for gas, electricity, internet & food myself, so everything that's left of my scholarship after that and books, conference fees etc is free to be spent on what I want to spend it on. Which is probably 90% music, PJ and others. I don't have a partner, no kids, and am not planning to in the next ten years at least, if at all. That's basically it...nobody to spend money on but myself, and generous parents.

Me too  works for me for now. Who knows what the future holds. Prague 2012 was my 'Ten'th show and I am hoping to continue as long as my health and circumstances remain stable....morello wrote:I'm single, don't have any kids, am happy with my not too flash house, am on an ok salary, all my friends here in NZ are married with babies so what I might spend on going out here, or kids, or a partner, or having a flash house, I spend on overseas trips, or that's how it's working out at the moment anyway.

It's all about college. Met lots of friends there who now live all over the country and let me stay for free. Got degrees that led to a job that pays me a ridiculous salary and gives me lots of vacation. Met an awesome wife there who does her own thing but is tolerant of me going to shows.
It also helps that I live in the best state to be a PJ fan... Pennsylvania. Lots of opportunities to see them live.0 -
i sell kind grilled cheese sandwiches and ice cold budweiser beer for 1$ in the parking lots at ed shows
it works

This, pretty much (subsitute NZ for UK...)
I have a decent job in the Civil Service in the UK and usually save my holidays for going to see PJ on tour. In the last 4 years, I've done shows in Australia, NYC, LA, Canada and Europe.
Tours are announced with plenty of time to sort out costs for flights, hotels and of course, the tickets themselves. Yes, it's not cheap, but it's no different from going on holiday each summer, but adding in PJ shows for the mix!

I don't quite know how people afford to do it. The one tour I went to the most shows on (Riot Act--nine shows over 4 months) worked perfectly for me because--for one--Pearl Jam used to tour most of the country back then. I started in Denver, 7 hour drive from my home (and another place that doesn't get played any more), saw State College cause my now-wife lived in Virginia at the time so we road tripped out there and got a $35 priceline room at a golf resort, then went to visit my sister in San Diego so saw that show, then Vegas and Phoenix on the way back to NM... then end of the 2nd leg visited now-wife again in DC, so saw the DC show, traveled up to see her parents in NJ and went to Camden, then stayed in Manhattan and went to both MSG shows, the only bulk that we really spent a few hundred bucks on with the hotel for two nights, etc.
San Francisco 2006 was another good one. Stayed with a friend who lives there and got to 3 shows in 4 nights. That's the way to go but they don't do too many like that.
Those were the days. I know I'll never get to do that many shows again. Most tours these days I would be happy to get to one show and ecstatic for more than one! How people go to 8-12 shows IN A ROW, I have no idea!ABQ 93, Las Cruces 95, ABQ 98, Bridge School 10/30/99, Lubbock 00, ABQ 00, Denver 03, State College 03, San Diego 03, Vegas 03, PHX 03, D.C. 03, Camden 7/5/03, NYC 7/8/03 + 7/9/03, Vegas 06, San Francisco 7/15/06 + 7/16/06 + 7/18/06, Kansas City 10, [EV:ABQ 11/6/12], Chicago 13, PHX 13, Denver 14--PJ24!, Telluride 16, Chicago 8/20/16, Chicago 8/18/18, Phoenix 22, Denver 22, Vegas 5/16/24
