This isn't new though - you're right - it started long ago. I mean we pay to post here. I'm not begrudging them, I'm just pointing something out. If I were them, I would be doing the same thing they are. I just wouldn't have rattled on for years about the evils of doing it - that's what makes them even more call-out-able than Wyclef et al.
i can see that part of it. i guess i never bought into it. When you gross $10 million a year in the corporate world like they probably do there's no way you can truly be a blue collar worker no matter how good their words sound. It's more honest to hear Mike talk about how he loves his Porsche. But if a company offered me a chance to play music to a room full of middleclass people for an hour for a couple of million i'd do it in a second.
Not that this is necessarily the case here, but some bands that do corporate gigs often do them to create work for their crew members during the bands downtime.
They are coming around the home stretch of their career and probably looking to cash in on their hard work.
A lot of people have more or less made this same point. Without angering anybody by the implications that may or may not go with what I'm about to ask, does anybody really not think they've got another 15-20 years of coasting ahead of them? The Stones, the Who, Bruce Springsteen, U2...I bet every single one of those acts made more money in the second twenty years of their career than they did in the first. You don't really think Pearl Jam is going to pass up that opportunity, do you?

I worry they might follow the REM model and out of nowhere one day they are gone. The side projects are growing and Eddie's solo career is a real thing now. I do worry about fewer days ahead than behind.
We have no idea what the machinations were that set this up or the band's motivation for agreeing to play. Yet there is a sizable subset of "fans" that are always quick to leap to the negative in the name of some sort of self-righteousness. After 20 years, the guys have probably realized it's a hell of a lot more fun to hang out with a bunch of IT people than some of the lunatics whose happiness is tied to the ethos of five people they've never met.

Yes, I could see Eddie turning into Bono at this point. Doing good work with charity and cashing in on the backs of huge corporations.
It would be a shame to see PJ playing state fairs and indian casinos in 20 years because they want to "cash in"

By "lunatics" do you mean "fans". The reason why those guys are relavent to the world.

they are relevant to the world because they wrote/write good music. nobody makes a band but themselves.

I can see where you're coming from, but at the same time I feel like R.E.M. and Pearl Jam both went through their careers looking in different directions for approval. Michael and co. always seemed to seek reassurance from being accepted by those who came after them, be it the Pixies, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Interpol, Coldplay, the Killers, etc. It seemed important to them that those who were influenced by them still accepted them and approved of what they were doing. I feel like that's why it became important to them to reach what they considered a natural and respectable stopping point. Pearl Jam seems to have gone through their career looking backwards, seeking the approval of those who influenced them, be it Neil Young, the Who, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., etc. I feel like as long as they look around and see Bruce and Neil pushing it into their 60's, they're going to feel like that's what they're supposed to do as well (if that makes sense).

this is exactly what's going on here.... I hope everyone realizes that in their post.
The band decided to play a promotional event for John Tester.
To do this, that means they have to mobilize the ground crew.
Most people don't realize the mobilization fee is ridiculous large compared to the operating cost. In order to pay off the mobilization costs, the band would have looked at exactly how many shows it would take to put them back in the black for the "tour".
The number of shows worked out to 3 festivals + this gig. End of story. It was the quickest, easiest way to not have a net loss for playing the promotional even for Tester.
Again - I point out to the RATM tour of Europe last year... what was it 4 shows + the free show in the UK? Same deal.
Just because PJ are donating a show to John Tester for his campaign fund it doesn't mean they don't have to pay the US ground crew...
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.
I'm a Metclub member as well and won tickets via a contest to the Dreamforce 2011 show. What a cool experience that was. I'm sure Pearl Jam will do something similar, set up a contest for tenclub members. If you get selected, you get to bring a +1. When I won the contest, I took another Metclub member for free. Keep in mind, some winners were charging hundreds for there +1's. Guess What.... because I did that... someone took me to Night 4 of the 30th Anniversary Metallica shows at the Fillmore last December for free. Those +1 tickets were going for $400+ on the Metallica forums.
2010: Mountain View, CA (10/23)
2011: East Troy, WI (9/3-9/4)
2012: Missoula, MT (09/30) - San Francisco, CA (10/03)
2013: Chicago, Ill (07/19) - Los Angeles (11/23 - 11/24) - Oakland (11/26) - Portland (11/29) - Spokane (11/30) - Seattle (12/06)

I don't think Springsteen belongs in that category as far as compromising his ideals.

they could solve that problem by, you know, touring

I meant that list as a list of acts who have been financially more successful in the second half of their career, not in terms of compromising their ideals. I don't know that I believe the Stones really ever had any ideals they could compromise in the first place...

How great is this?
One member gets to go see Pearl Jam at a concert for executives.
I am sure glad the 250,000+ membership of Pearl Jams fan club are being rewarded for their years of loyalty.
With the opportunity to maybe win a contest to go see your band that hasn't done a tour for nearly 2 years in the US.
The chances of winning this unbelievable thing will probably get another 100,000 US fans to join the site and maybe in the next 5 years have a 10 city tour of the USA.
Good times

Hey Logic and Reason... :nono: You have no place here...
At risk of being banned I pose this question again...
When will Pearl Jam play Iran, China or do some shows in the diamond mines of Africa... Maybe the Africans can hold up lighters with the hand (they still have)?
Shameful

Corporate gigs, headlining shows at festivals for quick money... is this really the new Pearl Jam?
