Modest Mouse

A huge fan right here.

As much as I completely love everything they have done, I have to admit, and it may be blasphemous, that I actually prefer Moon and Antarctica, Good News and We Were Dead, to their previous, past work.

Isaac has some pretty mind blowing lyrics. I find comfort in his words and the music itself, because I get the feeling Isaac is what we call a "searcher", I include myself in this classification. Someone who is trying to find his place, his calling etc...

And its nice to know I am not the only person who is going through this. This task has been both the greatest and the worst experience of my life, and you can tell Isaac has been through hell and back.

Apart from the lyrics and the personal meaning, I absolutely love the sort of out of tune guitar tones they use.

And it's not just the lyrics that are awesome.

The music to "I Came As A Rat" is possibly one of my favorite pieces.

They are a great band; I quite enjoy almost anything they have put out on the past 4 albums.

  • i have Long Drive and Lonesome crowded by havent given them as much time, as I have Moon, Good News, and We Were Dead.

Are those albums great as well? Dramamine remains such an EPIC song. But thats the only highlight that I can think of based on cursory listen,

For the most part, I'm only really familiar with Good News... & We Were Dead..., but the music on those two albums are stellar. Definitely will be checking out more Modest Mouse soon :)

Long Drive is good...less standout tracks IMO, and I haven't listened to Lonesome Crowded West...Long Drive was definitely a more acquired taste for me than their newer stuff, though.

It seems that you have very similar taste to me, and if that's the case, I think you'll really enjoy The Lonesome Crowded West. "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" is such a gnarly opener.

Also, check out the No One's First, and You're Next EP. Good stuff.

The Moon and Antarctica is one of the best albums I have ever heard and Dark Center of the Universe is one of my favorite songs. On a side note, Modest Mouse is the best drunk band of all time. I'm not sure what it is but when im drunk nothing sounds better to me.

i either hate a song or love a song by them. the ex loves them and i used to hate them but the more she played them the more i dug them...moon and antartica is my fav. their last two are alright. his voice will either make a song for me or ruin it completely..very odd and interesting band.

i have everything they have put out practically even the hard to find ep's such as the fruit that ate it self and everywhere and his nast parlour tricks. the earlier stuff is very abrasive at first but if you can stick it out and listen more than a few times you start to love em. some of my favs are on this is a long drive. check out tundra/desert and talkin shit about a pretty sunset on that album. they will blow your ass out the water.

Just saw them last night at the House of Blues:

Set: Missed the Boat, Paper Thin Walls, Never Ending Math Equation, Autumn Beds, We've Got Everything, Float On, Dramamine/(Life Like Weeds), Bukowski(My favorite of the night)-->Tiny Cities Made of Ashes (insane), The View, Blame It on the Tetons, Out of Gas, Here It Comes, Black Cadillacs, Shit Luck, Parting of the Sensory

Encore: Satin in a Coffin, Gravity Rides Everything Play Video, Trucker's Atlas, Spitting Venom

Heavy on the Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which I loved. Seen them 4 times now and this was probably the best one.

nothing set in stone. but the rumor is this year possibly. Its been such a long gap between the last album and any new stuff. We were dead came out in 2007, so its been a long time. The last I heard was that Big Boi of outkast was producing the new album

they really are one of the strangest bands around. Made depressing music all the way back in the 90's languishing in obscurity in Washington, then hit it big in 2003/2004 with a song thats their most happiest in their catalogue, and in that same year appear in major magazines and on The OC.

I can say alot of band's soundtracked my 20's, but very few of those can I say actually created instrumentation and music that sounds like the that decade of life to fit along side powerful and poignant lyrical content. Modest Mouse are one of those rarified bands.

The lyrics just seem so brilliant. You can tell Isaac has gone through some intense stuff, but he's as unsure of himself as we all are of ourselves, and i think that makes for powerful lyrics. Theres just this brilliant dichotomy in them, on the one hand there is a feeling that this guy is stuck in a rut and wants to get his life going again, which is coupled with lyrics that seems to implore and demand the listener make something of their lives before its too late, to start living life because this is all we have.

Theyve been off the radar for a few years because of the large gap in albums, but I have no doubt whatever the next LP is, it will be great.

I like them, don't have all their albums just a few. Ok live. Saw them open up for REM A few years back and enjoyed them. Saw them this year at Orion and didn't do anything for me. Missed them at Firefly for another band.

Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands. I love them.
Not sure I'm digging the singles from the new album so far.... but I've only listened to them once or twice each.... and I think was in a bad mood at the time. :P
I really wish they'd come and do a real show in Vancouver. I've never seen them live. :frowning:
