Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep a dog out of the litter box? I keep finding it with the lid completely removed, and I'm pretty sure it's not the cat.
I've considered putting a small "doggy door" kind of thing on the door to the room where the litter box is located for the cat, but I do not own the place where I live so I don't want to go to the trouble of rigging a door.
I don't want to keep our cat locked in a room all day with his poop palace just to keep Zeke from getting into it.
Right now, my best idea is to put a litter box together out of one of those Rubbermaid storage totes and cut a hole in the lid on top. I think the cat could still get in and out, and Zeke wouldn't be able to get his mischevious snout in there.
So, pet owners... got any other suggestions?
May I ask what you feed your cat?
Bugsy had this problem when he was young...
Eating his own poo while crated and from the cat box
The teacher of our obedience class mentioned byproducts being in the food
(this was years before all the dog food recalls and everything... we were uninformed in the pet food department then)
Start looking at the ingredients, first thing is by-products. (Purina, Eukenuba, Science Diet.... all the "good brands" that the vets give you, sell and promote :fp: )
Apparently, something in the byproducts makes their waste still smell like good food to them.
Not to mention its just gross, the idea of byproducts in food...
There are tons of natural food brand options out there now. Im a big fan of Wellness and recently switched both the dog and cat to Blue Buffalo because its a little cheaper. Just read the labels. Byproducts are bad.
Your dog may have formed some sort of a "habit" out of this, and he may still try to go for it in the beginning... Any way you could put up a baby gate or something to the room where the litter box is for a while? Kitty could jump the gate...Zeke, maybe not so much...
Another thing I was told, but was reluctant to do myself...
Apparently you can buy liquid MSG in the supermarket.
If you add a few drops to the cat food, its supposed to neutralize the smell of their poo.
I dont like the idea of MSG in people food (just like byproducts) so wasnt so keen on giving it to my cat, even though I was told it was harmless.

Both our dog and cat eat Blue Buffalo food. Good stuff. When I worked at a PetSmart (specifically in the Pet Hotel there) I attended a seminar about dog foods and the quality of them. It's insane to know what goes into the cheap stuff like Ol' Roy, Pedigree, etc. It's worth it to buy your animals good, quality food. Anyway, I think we fixed the problem by simpling turning the litter box around towards the wall but with enough room for the cat to get in, but not enough room for Zeke to stick his head in the opening.
Too easy.
If it ends up failing though, I'm going for the baby gate idea.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

It amazes me how many people are uninformed still about what they feed their pets.
Im ashamed it took me the first 2 years of Bugsy's life to figure it out...
He's going to be 9 in September and he's the healthiest/most active dog out of any of my friends or families pets who are close in age. It is for sure due to the food he eats.
Guess Zeke was just a little bored... :xMansfield, MA - Jul 02, 2003; Mansfield, MA - Jul 03, 2003; Mansfield, MA - Jul 11, 2003; Boston, MA - Sep 29, 2004; Reading, PA - Oct 01, 2004; Hartford, CT - May 13, 2006; Boston, MA - May 24, 2006; Boston, MA - May 25, 2006; Hartford, CT - Jun 27, 2008; Mansfield, MA - Jun 28, 2008; Mansfield, MA - June 30, 2008; Hartford, CT - May 15, 2010; Boston, MA - May 17, 2010; [EV - Providence, RI - June 15, 2011; EV - Hartford, CT - June 18, 2011]; Worcester, MA - Oct. 15, 2013; Worcester, MA - Oct. 16, 2013; Hartford, CT - Oct. 25, 2013; Boston, MA - August 5, 2016; Boston, MA - August 7, 2016...0 -

He's a damn deviant. Just last night I was really sucked into a basketball game and he keeps pawing at me, so I pause it and take him out thinking he's really gotta go and it's going to be quick. He runs off and I find him just eating grass and grazing like cattle.
He's a dork, but damnit I love him.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

Love it. Great photo.
We kept bringing Brian Wilson the dog in the house and scratching his head, telling him he'd be good luck for the Kings. (I know, I know, a Giants dog, LA Kings, doesn't make sense.)0 -

So many cute black Labs!
Here's a recent photo of Layla. She's basically an inside dog now. I'm definitely going to start doing loose leash obedience training courses with her soon, since her Husky instinct for pulling things also includes me during walks. She's been a fantastic house dog though. She's my Velcro dog for sure!
