and where are the stats on the race and ethnicity of the majority of shooters? or is that somehow racist to print that?0

I'd agree that's part of the solution -- at least insofar as keeping kids occupied (sports, music, etc) after school is a great way to lessen the draw of gangs. But aren't we treating the symptoms rather than the cause with this approach? shadowcast posted some pretty compelling statistics above about fatherless homes.polaris_x wrote:mikepegg44 wrote:gang violence. If you can figure out how to crack that nut you will have done mankind a great service. My contention would be eliminate the pricey black market on drugs. Puts more parents back home, gets rid of much of the incentive to operate a street gang. who knows otherwise...there are simply pockets of gang culture that are more violent than others...interesting phenomenon...
i think gang violence is related to social infrastructure ... here in ontario ... we had minimal gang violence up until the conservatives started cutting all the social programs ... consequences were that after school programs for youth were cut ... single parents had to work more hours to make ends meet ...etc ... then we started putting money back into the social safety net and gang violence has subsided again ... although the police won't officially say it to be the case - many officers believe after school programs for youth and better community involvement has made a difference ...0

depends on who you ask, if you ask the bad guys (with guns) they will tell you it's working great because they love an unarmed victim but on the other hand if you ask the unarmed victim you might gat a different answer.

Ah, blame the taxpayer, it's their fault because they don't want to fund behavior programs to keep people from being animals.0

makes sense to me. kids get bored they do stupid shit... some it can be innocent but some can end up being illegal. theyre not wild animals.. they do need to be supervised and they do need structure.. especially if thats somewhat lacking in the home or where ever. these programmes are a good good thing and should be supported... where ever in the world they are.hear my name

whether one wants to look at human development indexes or crime stats ... it is evident that countries that employ a socialized approach are more successful than countries that don't ...
i think a big problem many americans have is equating their dysfunctional corporately controlled gov't as meaning gov't is bad ... sure, if i had your gov't - i would say it sucks balls too but it doesn't mean the concept of gov't and social programs are bad ...0

I think you meant to say parent as over 75% of innner city black youths only have one parent. Mostly it's the mother.
70 percent of African American children are born to unmarried mothers, and [...] at least 80 percent of all African American children can now expect to spend at least a significant part of their childhood years living apart from their fathers
I will stand by this being the major part of the problem.0

I don't know if you noticed, but we are broke down here. We tax the poor through a lotto system that is supposed to help the schools (and then we tax the lucky person that wins).polaris_x wrote:whether one wants to look at human development indexes or crime stats ... it is evident that countries that employ a socialized approach are more successful than countries that don't ...
